Archaeologist

Tremaine & Associates, Inc., established in 1994, is a cultural and natural resources consulting firm based in West Sacramento, California. We specialize in providing comprehensive resource management services that incorporate advanced geophysical technologies. Reports to: Field Supervisor FLSA Classification: Hourly/Non-Exempt Project Summary Key duties include shovel testing, survey, site mapping, and artifact identification. This physically demanding role requires field school experience, often a bachelor’s degree in anthropology, and the ability to work in varying, rugged, or harsh weather conditions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Field Investigation: Perform Phase I surveys, shovel testing, and data recovery excavations to identify prehistoric or historic sites. Documentation: Record field data, including soil profiles, site maps, and daily notes; take photographs of findings. Artifact Management: Collect, clean, and analyze artifacts in the field or lab, including initial identification and cataloging. Technology Use: Utilize GPS units for mapping, surveying, and collecting positional data. Reporting: Complete standardized site forms, daily reports, and technical documentation. Safety & Logistics: Maintain field equipment and adhere to safety protocols, including those for working in remote or rough terrain. Supervisory Responsibilities The position does not have any supervisory responsibilities. Education and/or Experience Education: A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related field is typically required. Experience: Completion of an accredited archaeological field school is generally essential. Physical Stamina: Ability to hike long distances, lift/carry up to 50+ lbs., and work in extreme heat or cold. Skills: Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in a team environment.
