Solid Waste Tech I

The City of Valdez is hiring a Solid Waste Tech I at the Baler Facility. This position, under general supervision, drives a truck to collect, transport and dispose of refuse and trash, operates within the baler facility and at landfill as needed. This position required a pre-employment UA/BA and is part of the City of Valdez DOT random testing program. This is a fully-benefited, full-time hourly position working 37.5 hours per week with a potential non-standard schedule. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma, or GED equivalent, Must possess and maintain a valid Alaska CDL-B or higher driver's license or ability to obtain within first 6 months of hire. Will be required to submit to driving history review, must have clean record for minimum past 5 years. TWIC

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and airborne and blood borne pathogens, and frequent walking, bending and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of: Department and City policies and procedures. Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation. State & Federal regulations on handling and disposal of solid waste and hazardous waste. Skill in: The safe operation of heavy equipment and vehicles. Following work instructions. Safe operations of refuse handling equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Operates heavy equipment and other machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Loads and unloads truck; lifts and carries refuse and trash from homes to collection trucks; collects and empties dumpsters from commercial and public sites. Operates loader and baler equipment as required; hauls trash bales to landfill. Performs proper disposal of hazardous waste and recyclable materials. Maintains truck log, truck inspection forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports. Assists with inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair of vehicles.
