Acute Care OT Supervisor - Lead Clinical Team

Job Summary The OT Supervisor (Occupational Therapy Supervisor) provides clinical and operational leadership for a high-performing acute care Occupational Therapy team within a Level 1 trauma center and academic teaching hospital. Reporting to the department manager, this role supervises 25 staff and is primarily responsible for staffing/scheduling, daily workflow coordination, onboarding, training, and performance management to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality care. The OT Supervisor supports real-time clinical and operational decision‑making and ensures delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered OT services across diverse, high‑acuity populations, including trauma, burn, critical care, neurology, oncology, transplant, pediatric, and complex medical/surgical patients. This role ensures compliance with licensure, credentialing, and regulatory standards while fostering staff development and continuous improvement in clinical outcomes and operational performance. In partnership with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation leadership and interdisciplinary teams, the OT Supervisor advances early mobility, functional progression, and discharge readiness to improve patient outcomes and reduce length of stay. The position also promotes standardized OT practices and collaborates across rehabilitation services to support consistency, quality, and innovation in care delivery. Key Responsibilities 55% – Supervises and Coordinates Occupational Therapy personnel assigned to multi‑function, multi‑unit service designated as Hospital‑Based Services. 15% – Patient Care: plans, develops, coordinates, directs, and implements Hospital‑Based OT programs for patients, infants, pediatric, and adult or older as requested by the physician. 15% – Administration and Organization. 10% – Educational Activities. 5% – Miscellaneous assignments as required. Minimum Qualifications A valid Occupational Therapist license issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT) American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR Minimum education satisfied through the attainment of the required license/certification Experience and clinical knowledge in Occupational Therapy Supervisory/leadership experience to effectively lead and direct subordinate staff using original and innovative approaches and techniques to solve complex problems, recognize trends, develop long‑range goals, and analyze data of a complex and variable nature in a manner consistent with department objectives and initiatives Ability to understand organizational goals, policies, procedures, and to correlate these to an individual program within the Occupational Therapy section Professional competency in therapy evaluation techniques such as range of motion, motor skills testing, testing of muscle strength, tone, sensation, activities of daily living, cognitive‑perceptual motor testing, and use of standardized tests for upper extremity function, including coordination Professional competency in treatment modalities, including activities of daily living and mobility training, normalizing muscle tone, strengthening, coordination, balance, range of motion, cognitive‑perceptual motor skills, training, providing/fabricating adaptive equipment, and recommending durable medical equipment Familiarity with fabrication and use of splints, construction of adaptive equipment, and use of modalities when appropriate Ability to recommend intervention of other health care professionals for patient care Skills in organizing written material Knowledge of appropriate information required for patient record keeping Ability to communicate clearly on a professional basis with physicians and to work cooperatively with a variety of health professionals Knowledge of requirements in processing for third‑party payers Ability to delegate responsibilities to other therapy staff as appropriate Ability to offer supervision to staff and/or students working with acute care patients Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate the scheduling of patients and staff in the assigned area Ability to prioritize the need for staff services Ability to recognize the need for updating and revising therapy programs, as well as developing and implementing new therapy programs and protocols in assigned service areas Proficiency in the documentation necessary for performance evaluations, corrective actions, and counseling necessary for assigned personnel on the acute care unit Ability to organize meetings and facilitate communication among therapy staff Attends required classes necessary to keep updated on supervisor skills and methods Knowledge of patient care and delivery standards necessary to monitor compliance of therapy staff Ability to communicate pertinent information and knowledge of acute patient services for the training and education of new therapists and all other therapy personnel assigned to the Acute Care Service Ability to verbally communicate and demonstrate pertinent information, skills, and knowledge of the profession for training on difficult and complex patients to other Occupational Therapy personnel and educating other hospital service personnel Ability to recognize and discuss problems related to the unit with staff for resolution and to discuss these issues with the department Manager to facilitate communication so that viable solutions may be reached Ability to act as liaison between therapy staff and other professional staff Ability to determine continuing education goals appropriate to the job Knowledge of appropriate conferences, seminars, meetings, and professional literature in the area of expertise Ability to attend annual fire safety, CPR, infection control, and other required safety classes Department Overview The primary purpose of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is to provide a full range of rehabilitation services designed to restore patients to their optimal functional capacity.
