Job Summary The Laboratory Hospital Phlebotomist is responsible for specimen collection, processing, and data entry services to support Mary Washington Healthcare’s mission and quality standards. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Greet patients, visitors, family members, physicians, and Associates courteously and professionally. Maintain an adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies and materials; ensure smooth operations in the phlebotomy work area. Train new associates and students from affiliated phlebotomy programs. Address customers’ needs efficiently, effectively, and confidentially. Perform blood collection by venipuncture and dermal puncture from patients of all ages following laboratory standards and procedures. Collect other body fluids as required. Follow all required processes for positive patient identification and registration. Label all samples precisely according to policy. Accession specimens delivered to the laboratory by physicians and nursing personnel. Answer telephone calls and assist callers or direct them to the appropriate department. Enter test orders, patient information, and specimen information into the laboratory computer system accurately and efficiently. Provide oral or written reports to physicians, physician office personnel, and nursing units for inpatients and outpatients. Print daily workflow reports, including HRP and un-received specimen lists, and communicate turnaround delays to the supervisor immediately. Adhere to departmental and organizational policies, procedures, standards, and protocols to ensure effective operations and quality patient care. Maintain patient confidentiality. Create an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and cooperation among Associates. Display a positive attitude and professional appearance. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma required. One year of phlebotomy experience or successful completion of an accredited, structured phlebotomy training program. ASCP phlebotomy certification desired. AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire. Previous customer service experience helpful. Excellent interpersonal and telephone skills required. Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks. Physical Requirements Constant walking, standing, and use of arms and hands (67‑100% of the workday). Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting (34‑66%). Lift 35 lbs. and push/pull 20 lbs. Auditory and visual skills, including color determination. Work in confined spaces, reach overhead. Mental & Communicational Requirements Critical thinking and analytical skills. Ability to multitask and communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team. Capacity to cope with difficult situations. Ability to tolerate irregular hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends. Environmental Requirements & Exposure Hazards Potential risk of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals. Potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens; must wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Driving requirements for clinical positions in Mary Washington Home Health and/or Hospice. Compensation Pay Range: $19.92 – $27.88 per hour.
