HVAC/Preventative Maintenance Technician

Position Information Job Category: Facilities Position Title: HVAC/Preventative Maintenance Technician Full Time/Part Time: Full Time Division: Finance and Administration Department: Facilities – Trades Work Arrangement: On‑Site (Hamilton, NY) Hourly Wage: $35.81/hr Responsibilities Maintain and repair all heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC/R) and refrigeration components on campus. Conduct layouts for assigned jobs, read and interpret prints, provide material and labor estimates, order materials, and translate prints into finished products. Maintain accurate records of materials used and time spent on assignments (duplicate entries removed). Maintain a working knowledge of new systems such as HVAC/R, fire alarms, electrical motors, chemical treatment and filtration of swimming pools, chillers, water softening equipment, and refrigeration systems. Use Building Automation systems for daily monitoring and troubleshooting; attend related training. Work independently, collegially, and effectively with faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors. Coordinate work with other trade shops and departments. Proficient use of personal computers for work order entries and campus energy management system. Provide service, repairs, and preventive maintenance for HVAC/R control systems including controllers, networks, and peripheral devices. Review project plans and specifications to accomplish project goals and objectives. Maintain sensors, thermostats, controllers, valves, actuators, and other HVAC/R control equipment. Qualifications and Experience At least one of the following: Certificate from an accredited apprentice program in HVAC/R. Graduation from a certified trade school plus one‑year work experience as an HVAC/R technician. Proof of five consecutive years as a Journeyperson working in HVAC/R. Ability to diagnose complex system issues without guidance. Ability to work independently and with a team, including with outside contractors. Must be available to work evenings, nights, and weekends. Preferred Qualifications A combination of additional education and/or experience related to instrumentation and control systems. Proficiency in Schneider Electric EcoStruxure and BACnet. Experience with system sequence of operations, system graphics, and configuring & mapping system points. Knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and other building subsystems. Education A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent is required, or a combination of education and experience that provides comparable skills. Certifications Current valid driver’s license, in accordance with the University’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy. EPA 608 Certification (Universal Refrigerant Technician) preferred at the time of hire. Physical Requirements Stand, stoop, bend, reach, and climb for long periods. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Wear NIOSH‑approved respirator and personal protective equipment, including flame‑resistant uniform per NFPA 70E. May be exposed to electrical shock, steam, and other hazards. Work in various environmental conditions. Exposure to heights, high‑speed power tools, and outdoor work. Required to work evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed. Follow safety procedures, wear PPE, and report unsafe conditions. Wear safety shoes and uniform as required.
