We are looking for a Senior Accountant who wants to be a Controller one day - and who understands that the fastest way to get there is to work somewhere small enough to touch everything. Maverick's finance function is two people: the Controller and you. Roughly half your time will be accounting in the traditional sense - reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and helping close the books accurately and on time. We run a disciplined close and produce a financial package leadership relies on, and you will help keep it that way. The other half of the role is the part most Senior Accountant jobs do not include: going out into the business to understand how it actually works, building the operational reporting leadership needs, mapping payments back to the transactions that generated them, and improving the operational processes that feed the numbers. We need someone with a real accountant’s instincts - the kind of person who cannot leave a reconciliation out of balance and who notices a number is wrong before anyone else does. We also need someone who would get restless doing only that. If your ideal week is half in the ledger and half wandering into Underwriting or HomeCare asking why a process works the way it does, this is the job. Responsibilities Close & Core Accounting Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules for the monthly close, and help the Controller close on a predictable calendar. Reconcile bank, premium trust, and operating accounts - investigating and resolving variances rather than carrying them forward. Pull vendor payables activity processed by our corporate shared services team into the ledger - coding, accruals, and cutoff - and keep expense records accurate and complete. Prepare audit schedules and support the year-end audit and any carrier or regulatory examination. Assist with commission calculations, carrier statement reconciliation, and settlement preparation. Transaction Mapping & Cash Application Own the matching of incoming and outgoing payments to the underlying policies, programs, warranties, and carrier obligations that generated them. Reconcile what the agency management system and warranty platforms report against what the bank and the general ledger show - and chase down every difference. Build repeatable processes for cash application so this work gets faster and less manual every month rather than simply recurring. Operational Reporting & Analysis Build and maintain the recurring reporting the business runs on: program and product profitability, revenue and commission trends, carrier balances and settlement status, and operating KPIs. Pull the raw data yourself, turn it into something a decision-maker can act on, and be able to defend how you got there. Answer the ad hoc questions leadership asks about the business - frequently ones nobody has answered before. Support the annual budget and rolling forecast, and help hold departments accountable to them. Process Building & Business Operations Document how finance and adjacent operational processes actually work today, then make them better. Identify the manual steps and spreadsheets that can be replaced, and work with the Controller and the engineering team to automate them. Take on the administrative and operational projects that come with a growing company - the ones that do not fit neatly into a job description but need an organized, trustworthy owner. Required Qualifications 3+ years of accounting experience - public accounting, industry, or a combination of both. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA, active CPA candidate, or the demonstrated intent and eligibility to pursue it. Genuine command of the fundamentals: you can build a reconciliation, trace a transaction end to end, and explain what an entry does to the financial statements. Advanced Excel. You should be the person who builds the model, not the person who asks for it. High attention to detail paired with a low tolerance for performing the same manual task twice. Clear written and verbal communication - you will regularly explain financial matters to people who do not work in finance. Preferred Qualifications Public accounting (audit) experience. Insurance, warranty, or financial services exposure - particularly premium, commission, or trust accounting. Experience with SQL, Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools, and comfort using AI to accelerate analysis and automation. Familiarity with an agency management system, policy administration platform, or comparable operational system. What Makes This Role Different Most Senior Accountant roles are a seat in a department. You are handed a defined set of reconciliations, you close, you repeat. You learn your slice very well and the rest of the business not at all. This is the opposite. There are two people in finance. Everything the Controller does not do, you do - which means that within a year you will have touched premium trust accounting, carrier settlements, commission structures, warranty reserves, budgeting, cash forecasting, systems integration, and the operational mechanics of an insurance MGU, an agency, and a warranty administrator. That breadth is deliberate. We want someone who intends to be a Controller someday, because that person digs into things a career Senior Accountant would not bother with. You will report directly to the Controller, with regular exposure to the President and the leadership team. Ownership comes early, and how much of it you take is largely up to you. The trade is an honest one: this is more work and more ambiguity than a comparable role at a larger company. What you get in return is a track record that says you have actually run things - in a specialty where experienced people are genuinely scarce.
