About MoMA’s Investment Office:

The Investment Office oversees The Museum of Modern Art’s Endowment and Pension and advises on the retirement plan. The Investment Office works closely with senior leadership of the Museum across all functions. The Museum’s $1.9 billion investment portfolio supports the Museum’s mission by providing a reliable source of funds for current and future use. The Endowment provides a major source of revenue for the Museum and is stewarded by a fourteen-person Investment Committee.

Position summary:

Reporting to and working closely with the Chief Investment Officer and collaborating across the Investment Office, the Associate Director/Director of Investments will be involved in all aspects of managing the Endowment and Pension Plan. These include sourcing, evaluating, recommending, and monitoring investments across asset classes, conducting research into trends and opportunities, and developing asset class strategies. The Investment Office is seeking excellent candidates with a range of experience for this new role and would consider individuals at an Associate Director to Director level that would best complement the cohesive four-person team.

Responsibilities :

While the responsibilities for an Associate Director and Director are similar in nature, a Director would bring more investment diligence and supervisory experience, deeper relationships, broader asset class knowledge and strong investment judgment.

• Develops and updates strategies for asset classes including: objectives, target return, exposure, portfolio construction and criteria for individual investments.
• Identifies and researches themes across asset classes and investments.
• Develops strong relationships with key investors to identify attractive investment opportunities, access capacity in constrained funds, and reference potential investments.
• Sources creative investment opportunities through a network of investors including managers and peers, consultants, databases and through independent research.
• Effectively prioritizes potential investments with compelling risk-adjusted returns.
• Assesses relative value and return potential of investments across asset classes.
• Identifies key research questions and initial investment theses and creates diligence plans.
• Conducts thorough investment due diligence to assess forward-looking risk-adjusted return potential by evaluating the strategy, process, organization, portfolio positions, and historical performance attribution.
• Maintains strong, collaborative relationships with current investment managers, a deep understanding of the organization and strategy while monitoring performance.
• Prepares materials and discusses asset class strategies, thematic research, new investment recommendations and risk and performance analysis with the Investment Committee.
• Communicates and collaborates strategically across the Museum with Finance, Accounting, Retail, and Digital teams on projects including financial planning and reporting, economic and market analysis, vendor evaluations and incorporation of technology.
• Meets with investment managers and attends investment conferences, with occasional travel.
• Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

• Associate Director level: minimum of seven years of investment experience with an endowment, foundation, pension fund, or institutional asset management firm. Director level: minimum of 10 years of investment experience with an endowment, foundation, pension fund, or institutional asset management firm.
• Strong academic credentials, an MBA/CFA or other advanced degree is preferred.
• Excellent oral communication in discussions and investment recommendations.
• Compelling writing skills to convey investment and thematic perspectives.
• Strong investment judgment founded on deep quantitative analysis and qualitative understanding that focuses on key investment questions and issues.
• Problem-solving skills to anticipate and address potential issues.
• Highly proactive in identifying areas of focus, potential investments and portfolio improvements.
• Excellent project management skills to develop and prioritize investment plans.
• Deep network and relationships across investment managers and peer institutions.
• Strong personal skills to collaborate and engage effectively with investment, operations and other professionals across the Investment Office and Museum.
• Highly proficient with artificial intelligence models, portfolio analytics, risk, and data platforms to enhance research depth, due diligence and reporting efficiency.
• Demonstrates a deep curiosity as an investor with a desire to produce high-quality work

Reports to: Chief Investment Officer

Salary range: The salary range for this position is $200,000 (for the Associate Director level) to $300,000 (for the Director level), commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications and a significant annual performance-based bonus opportunity.

Location: On-site presence is required five days a week during the 90-day initial employment period.
