Job Title: Machinist IV Job Description
The Machinist IV is responsible for operating and maintaining a wide range of machining equipment to support both development and manufacturing activities. In this role, you ensure that parts and assemblies conform to engineering specifications using appropriate inspection tools, and you provide mechanical support to produce and repair products and equipment across multifunctional teams and departments. You work with metals and plastics, interpret engineering drawings, and contribute to continuous improvement of machine shop procedures and practices.
Responsibilities- Machine parts to precise specifications using equipment such as power saws, mills, lathes, drills, and grinders.
- Set up, adjust, and operate a full range of machining tools, including CNC equipment, to produce high-quality components.
- Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines to ensure safe and accurate machining.
- Select, set, and monitor appropriate speed and feed rates during machining operations for optimal performance and part quality.
- Lay out, measure, and prepare stock materials for part manufacture in accordance with engineering requirements.
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to ensure accurate fabrication of parts and assemblies.
- Fabricate, repair, and assemble plastic and metal parts using mechanical equipment and standard shop practices.
- Use standard hand and power tools to assemble parts into subassemblies and finished products.
- Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment regularly to maintain proper working condition and extend equipment life.
- Use standard inspection equipment to verify that parts conform to supplied drawings, tolerances, and quality requirements.
- Train on and adhere to company procedures, including maintaining and drafting machine shop operational procedures and best practices.
- Maintain inventory of shop supplies and materials to support uninterrupted production and development activities.
- Understand and follow safety precautions, ensuring compliance with company safety policies and regulatory standards.
- Perform secondary machining operations such as threading, deburring, lapping, and polishing as required.
- Operate equipment including vertical mills, CNC mills, lathes, drill presses, bandsaws, table saws, and pedestal grinders.
- Operate measurement equipment such as calipers, micrometers, and indicators to confirm dimensional accuracy.
- Support testing and instrumentation activities in a production environment, contributing to reliable unit performance.
- Communicate issues, problems, and results that impact schedules, data accuracy, and product quality to relevant stakeholders.
- Organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High school diploma.
- Minimum of 5 years of machining experience, or an accredited trade school diploma in lieu of years of experience.
- Hands-on experience operating vertical mills, CNC mills, lathes, drill presses, bandsaws, table saws, and pedestal grinders.
- Proficiency in performing secondary machining operations such as threading, deburring, lapping, and polishing.
- Ability to interpret basic engineering drawings and requirements to guide machining and assembly work.
- Experience using basic hand tools and standard inspection equipment, including calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
- Basic materials knowledge for typical plastics and metals used in machining and fabrication.
- Familiarity with ISO standards and Good Manufacturing Practices in a production or manufacturing environment.
- Logical problem-solving skills with the ability to organize tasks and move projects forward in a structured manner.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to effectively communicate issues, problems, and results that impact schedules, accuracy, reliability of data, and product quality.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and basic computer operation, with the quantitative background to advance this knowledge on the job.
- Demonstrated consistency in performance and aptitude for taking on additional responsibility and accountability.
- Ability to multi-task and work productively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
- Ability to actively use hands for material and equipment manipulation and to lift items up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to perform physical actions while standing for long periods of time.
- Experience with CAD/CAM software such as Mastercam or Esprit is preferred.
- Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is preferred.
- Experience with CNC programming and setup on platforms such as Haas is beneficial.
- Familiarity with blueprint reading and detailed mechanical drawings.
- Exposure to soldering, PCB-related work, and test design is an advantage.
- Experience working with lab equipment and in ESD-conscious environments.
- Mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and supporting equipment and product repairs.

Work EnvironmentThis role is based in a production environment that combines machine shop activities with bench work, where you will test units and perform instrumentation duties. You will regularly operate machining equipment such as mills, lathes, drill presses, bandsaws, table saws, and grinders, as well as use measurement tools like calipers and micrometers. The environment is fast-paced and hands-on, requiring frequent standing, manual material handling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Work is performed in a setting that emphasizes safety, proper equipment care, and adherence to ISO and Good Manufacturing Practices.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockville, MD.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $40.87 - $44.23/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
