Position Overview

Medical Director at Torrance Companion Animal Hospital, Torrance, CA. Provide high‑quality veterinary care, work with team, support Hospital Manager, and Regional Director. The hospital offers comprehensive services for cats and dogs, 6 days a week, with emergency and urgent care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain high quality progressive veterinary care: oversee medical standards and quality; set policies; ensure team works together; recommend equipment additions; budget new equipment; see patients; manage communication; review records; manage controlled drugs; approve supply requests; conduct regular doctor meetings; perform duties as assigned.
  • Handle patient care problems, client complaints, and referral partner issues.
  • Manage veterinary, client, and board complaints; recommend resolutions.
  • Develop medical policies.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with state law and industry standards (Veterinary Medical Practice Act, OSHA, AAHA).
  • Monitor DVM performance and production; coach as appropriate.
  • Serve as mentor and role model for all staff veterinarians.
  • Lead candidate interviews of potential DVMs.
  • Identify new service opportunities that do not currently exist.
  • Hold ownership for revenue and practice success; monitor KPIs; adjust to achieve results.
  • Help identify & plan for upcoming operational challenges; plan temporary solutions (locum).

Qualifications (Required)

  • Veterinary degree (DVM or VMD) from an accredited institution.
  • Current state veterinary license.
  • DEA registration.
  • 3‑5+ years of experience in a veterinary practice.
  • Strong diagnostic and clinical skills.
  • Excellent surgical and dental skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team‑oriented environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to compassionate and high‑quality care.
  • Client communication skills: elicit information, establish rapport, explain treatment.
  • Display confidence and reassurance when dealing with stressed, ill, or painful pets.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
