Archaeologist
EWI Recruitment
We are seeking an Archaeologist to contribute to a varied programme of archaeological investigation, survey and recording. The successful candidate will support projects from initial assessment through to fieldwork, analysis and reporting, working across a range of sites and periods. This is an opportunity to join a collaborative professional environment where high standards of archaeological practice, clear communication and careful documentation are valued.
Duties will include undertaking desk-based assessments, watching briefs, evaluations, excavations and building or landscape surveys in accordance with approved methodologies and relevant professional standards. You will identify, record and interpret archaeological remains; complete context sheets, registers, photographic records and site plans; use surveying and recording equipment; and contribute to the safe and efficient running of fieldwork. The role may also involve supervising small teams, liaising with clients, contractors and specialists, monitoring progress, and helping to prepare assessment, evaluation and excavation reports. You may be required to assist with post-excavation tasks, including finds processing, data management, archive preparation and the production of illustrated reports.
Applicants should have a degree or equivalent qualification in archaeology, or a related subject, together with practical experience of archaeological fieldwork. Experience of commercial archaeology, planning-led investigations, archaeological recording systems and relevant legislation or guidance is desirable. You should be able to demonstrate sound observational and written communication skills, reliable attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A flexible approach is essential, as the role may involve travel, outdoor work in varying conditions and occasional overnight stays. A full driving licence, willingness to undertake required training and eligibility to work on active sites are advantageous. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain professional standards, follow health and safety procedures, and contribute positively to an inclusive and respectful working environment.
