Safety & Risk Management Technician

The Safety & Risk Management Technician supports the organization by identifying safety hazards, implementing corrective actions, and assisting with overall risk-reduction efforts. This position performs both safety/risk duties and hands-on safety maintenance repairs in the field. The technician works closely with supervisors, employees, and leadership to maintain safe operations, reduce liability exposure, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. This position will also continue to serve a supporting role as Facility Maintenance Technician.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform electrical maintenance including repair lights, receptacles, breakers, and switches; run new electrical lines; troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, and repair compactors. Makes electrical connections as required.
• Perform plumbing maintenance such as: repairing water lines, commodes, and faucets; replacing valves and sewer lines; and unclogging sewer lines, plumbing buildings.
• Perform carpentry maintenance such as: repairing or constructing new stairs, landings, decks, small buildings or sheds, walls, and fences. Paints, stains or seals as needed.
• Perform maintenance on buildings which includes installing drywall paneling, tile, roofing, replacing ceiling tiles, windows, doors and locks.
• Perform routine safety inspections and hazard identification of facilities, worksites, vehicles, and equipment and perform related mitigation and repairs within scope and training (or coordinate repair or replacement) to ensure compliance and reduce risks, prevent injuries or damage.
• Monitor employee PPE use and document.
• Provide field guidance for other maintenance personnel, as directed and coordinates with the facilities and public services and administration for larger or specialized repairs.
• Monitor work quality and ensure timely completion of assignments.
• Support compliance with OSHA, DPH, EPA, DOT, LLR, BUILDING CODES and other regulatory standards.
• Participate in risk assessments for new equipment, processes, or job tasks and assist in developing, reviewing, and updating safety policies, MSDS and procedures.
• Operate various vehicles, light to medium duty equipment, power tools, hand tools, landscaping equipment, office and electronic equipment, and etc.
• Maintain documentation related to inspections, maintenance documentation, logs, and compliance. Track completion of corrective actions and follow-up inspections.
• Position may support Landfill and/or Convenient site operations as needed or directed.
• Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.

Special Certifications and Licenses: Must possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent. Requires five (5) years of experience in maintenance and safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and experience in maintenance and safety or risk management. Knowledge of OSHA and general workplace safety principles. Ability to perform physical tasks, use hand tools, and complete minor repairs. Strong communication and documentation skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond to incidents promptly. Ability to work in outdoor and field environments, including extreme weather and emergency conditions.

Reasoning Ability, Mathematical and Language Skills: Technically savvy and experience with various systems. Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize in order to meet short deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to assist with behavioral based interviewing. Excellent listening and interpersonal skills. Must have the adaptability and flexibility to change dependent upon the environment. Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and have the ability to exhibit professional maturity. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.

Physical Demands: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping walking, standing, stooping, jumping, digging and physically raising and manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Position involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis, in addition, must be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working near motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
