ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Infrastructure Services is one of eight departments within the Jeffco Public Schools Information Technology Division and is led by the Executive Director of Infrastructure Services. The department provides and supports the foundational technology services that keep the District connected and operating, including network and wireless services, systems and servers, cloud infrastructure, data centers, and telecommunications. Infrastructure Services focuses on delivering reliable, secure, observable, and resilient technology services while continually modernizing the District’s infrastructure. The team partners closely across the IT Division to ensure infrastructure solutions support application and system requirements, network performance and compatibility, cybersecurity and identity standards, and the evolving technology needs of the District.

ABOUT THE JOB

The Infrastructure Services team is seeking a Network Engineer to support Jeffco’s enterprise wired and wireless network environment. This hands-on role configures, maintains, monitors, and troubleshoots network systems and services, including routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, VoIP, video surveillance, and other network-connected technologies. The Network Engineer works closely with senior engineering staff, network security architects, vendors, and IT partners to resolve technical issues, optimize network performance, and implement infrastructure improvements. PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENT

The successful new hire or rehired candidate will be responsible to complete and incur the fingerprinting and processing fee of $57.50 through an appropriate fingerprinting vendor and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, within 48 hours of offer acceptance.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Responsible for the wired and wireless networking technologies across the District's enterprise environment, including approximately 150 schools, two data centers, MDFs and IDFs, private and consumer network circuits, and enterprise network infrastructure. Supports voice, wireless, and data communications and is responsible for the administration of routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, phone systems, video surveillance systems, and other network-connected devices. Monitors network health and performance, identifies opportunities for improvement, and provides analysis, reporting, and recommendations to support a reliable, highly secure, and efficient network environment for students and staff. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following. Responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, and upgrading of network systems and components, including routers, switches, wireless infrastructure, security cameras, phone systems, and other network-connected devices. Troubleshoot network hardware, software, and connectivity issues through resolution, escalating complex problems requiring advanced design or engineering expertise to senior engineering staff as appropriate. Manage IP address planning, access control list generation and maintenance, routing, device configuration management, and Quality of Service (QoS) to support reliable and secure network operations. Monitor network performance, availability, and traffic on a daily basis to proactively identify potential issues, analyze trends, and recommend opportunities to improve network performance and efficiency. Serve as a primary responder for network-related incidents and service disruptions. Collaborate with vendors, service providers, and District IT staff to troubleshoot and resolve issues and restore services efficiently. Support WAN and WLAN data communication connectivity, including VoIP, and perform the daily administration and operation of LAN, WAN, and WLAN network environments. Assist senior engineering staff with the implementation and maintenance of hybrid and cloud network connectivity, telephone and VoIP deployments, and other network infrastructure initiatives. Partner with network security architects to strengthen the security, resilience, and reliability of the District's network infrastructure, ensuring continuous service availability, effective risk mitigation, and support for business continuity objectives. Maintain accurate network documentation and operational records, including configurations, IP addressing, network changes, and other information necessary to support ongoing network operations and troubleshooting. Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of network assets, including equipment in storage, deployed in production environments, and identified for replacement or disposal. Research network technologies, hardware, software, and industry practices and provide technical information and recommendations to support District network operations and technology objectives. Safely drives district vehicle to district sites. Maintain vehicle in a neat condition. Ensure vehicle is properly secured and not left unattended. Perform other duties as assigned. EXPERIENCE: Minimum five years of experience supporting enterprise network environments, including the installation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring, and troubleshooting of LAN, WAN, WLAN, VoIP, video surveillance, and related network systems. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Bachelor's degree required. Preferred field of study of Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, or a related field. Additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid driver's license required. ITIL Foundation, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Juniper Networks Certified Associate - Junos (JNCIA-Junos), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), and CompTIA Network+ certifications preferred but not required. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of enterprise networking concepts and technologies, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, IP addressing and subnetting, DNS, DHCP, routing and switching, VLANs, LAN/WAN/WLAN architecture, VPN technologies, wireless networking, VoIP, Quality of Service (QoS), network monitoring, and network security principles and practices. Knowledge of routing protocols, access control, authentication, network segmentation, and the integration of wired, wireless, voice, video surveillance, and network-connected systems. Knowledge of network automation and scripting tools, including Python and Ansible. Skilled in using network management, monitoring, and diagnostic tools such as Nagios, CheckMK, or comparable platforms. Skilled in analyzing, troubleshooting, problem-solving, organization, and communication. Ability to leverage automation and AI-enabled tools to improve network administration and operational workflows. Ability to develop and maintain network diagrams, configurations, technical documentation, and operational records and follow established change management processes. Ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate effectively with technical staff, vendors, and service providers, and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences. SPAN OF CONTROL: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Within established policies, procedures, and change management processes, the position is authorized to administer, configure, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot assigned network infrastructure and systems. This includes implementing approved network configuration changes and taking appropriate action to resolve network incidents and maintain service availability. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a variety of District environments, including office settings, schools, data centers, network and telecommunications rooms, and other locations containing technology infrastructure. May occasionally work in confined or limited-access equipment spaces and be exposed to electrical equipment, elevated noise levels, dust, temperature variations, and other conditions associated with network and technology equipment. Noise level is generally moderate but may be higher in data centers and equipment rooms.
