Electrical Engineer Power Electronics

This role leads the conceptual and detailed design of advanced power conversion products for aerospace and defense applications, with a strong focus on power electronics, motor control, and switched-mode power supplies. You will own the full engineering lifecycle from topology selection and detailed circuit design through qualification, transition to manufacturing, and sustaining support for fielded products. You will also guide a small team of engineers, drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, and contribute to technical proposals for new business.

Responsibilities

• Lead conceptual and detailed design of new power conversion products, including topology trade studies, magnetics design, worst case circuit analysis (WCCA), component derating, and thermal, shock, and vibration analyses.
• Design and develop power electronics circuits such as motor drives and switched-mode power supplies using MOSFET, IGBT, SiC, and GaN devices, including gate drive, PWM control, buck, boost, inverter, and DC-DC converter topologies.
• Approve qualification test plans, test procedures, and test reports, ensuring that all designs meet performance, reliability, and compliance requirements.
• Own the engineering-to-manufacturing transition for new designs, ensuring Design for Excellence (DFX) principles, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT), are incorporated before production release.
• Lead root cause and corrective action (RCCA) activities for test failures and field returns using structured methods such as fishbone (Ishikawa) analysis and fault tree analysis (FTA), and drive corrective actions to verified closure.
• Recommend and implement product improvements for existing designs based on test results, field data, and customer feedback.
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve engineering processes, standards, and procedures to enhance engineering quality, efficiency, and product development execution.
• Own sustaining engineering activities, including response to field issues, engineering support for in-production units, component obsolescence management, drawing revisions, and derivative design work.
• Balance sustaining engineering workload against new product development commitments to ensure both are delivered on schedule.
• Personally manage select small projects and internal engineering initiatives end-to-end, including defining scope, building schedules, planning resources, tracking milestones, and communicating with stakeholders where dedicated program management is not assigned.
• Lead development of the technical content of proposals and responses to requests for proposals (RFPs), including system descriptions, requirements compliance matrices, qualification approaches, technical risk discussions, work estimates, and bases of estimate.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including other electrical engineers and mechanical engineers, to integrate power conversion products into complete systems.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers, providing technical direction, design reviews, and support in developing their skills in power electronics and system design.
• Support the integration of software-based command and control systems into inverter and converter designs, including active power factor correction front ends, selectable output configurations, multiple-unit smart sharing systems, and data bus communications such as CAN and ARINC 429.
• Contribute to the development and support of energy storage products, including lithium-ion battery and charger systems for aerospace and defense applications.

Essential Skills

• Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 8+ years of power electronic design experience.
• Strong experience with power electronics, including switched-mode power supplies, motor control, and power conversion.
• Proficiency with schematic design for power electronic circuits and systems.
• Hands-on experience with MOSFET, IGBT, SiC, and GaN devices, including gate drive design and PWM control.
• Knowledge of buck, boost, inverter, and DC-DC converter topologies and switching frequency considerations.
• Experience with transformer and magnetics design for power conversion applications.
• Ability to perform worst case circuit analysis (WCCA), component derating, and thermal, shock, and vibration analyses.
• Experience applying Design for Excellence (DFX) principles, including Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT).
• Demonstrated ability to lead projects and manage engineering activities from concept through production release.
• Experience conducting root cause and corrective action (RCCA) using structured techniques such as fishbone (Ishikawa) analysis and fault tree analysis (FTA).
• Strong analog design and power conversion experience
• Ability to mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical documentation, reports, and proposal content.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with power electronics for aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial, or grid-tied applications.
• Familiarity with active power factor correction front ends and selectable output power designs.
• Experience with multiple-unit smart sharing systems for power distribution.
• Exposure to software-based command and control systems integrated into inverter and converter designs.
• Experience with data bus communication protocols such as CAN and ARINC 429.
• Experience in energy storage systems, including lithium-ion battery and charger designs.
• Experience supporting in-production units, handling component obsolescence, and managing drawing revisions.
• Prior involvement in proposal development, including requirements compliance matrices, qualification strategies, and technical risk assessments.
• Experience in environments such as EV/automotive power, industrial motor drives, power supplies/power management, grid/solar inverters, or defense/aerospace power is beneficial.
• Experience leading or collaborating with small, multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rahway, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $76.00 - $80.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
