Physician Assistant I Cardiac Surgery Inpatient Nocturnist

Cardiac Surgery PA position working 13‑hour nights in the cardiac surgery ICU and step‑down units, working with cardiac surgeons and ICU staff. The BWH Cardiac Surgery Service is a 24/7 PA‑run service; therefore, rotating weekends and holidays are required. The starting salary is $139,755.20. This position qualifies for enrollment in the MGB Shift Commitment program, paid in two semi‑annual lump sum payments (initial 6‑month award $8,000, final award $12,000), for a total payment of $20,000 for participants who work the minimum hours requirement within the 12‑month period. The PA is a licensed provider, credentialed with Operative First Assist, and may act as a responding clinician for patients with ventricular assist devices. May also precept a small number of learners. Essential Functions Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients in the cardiac surgery department. Assists surgeons in the operating room, performing technical clinical procedures. Performs complete histories and physical examinations. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops appropriate plans of care and follow‑up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. Consistently provides high‑quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries. Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population. Job Requirements Education Master's Degree in Physician Assistant required. Licenses and Credentials Physician Assistant MA State License. Certification BLS/ACLS required. Experience 2+ years of experience as a PA preferred; outstanding candidates with less than 2 years will be considered. For new graduates: cardiac/cardiac surgery and ICU rotation or relevant work experience mandatory. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients. Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings. Ability to maintain quality control standards. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
