Job Description Summary Under direct/general supervision of the Laboratory Technologist III and/or Research Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technologist II performs complex laboratory tests and molecular laboratory procedures to support SCTR Research Nexus approved clinical trials. Responsibilities include sample procurement, processing, banking, shipping, data entry, record keeping, and responding to study team inquiries. The role requires knowledge of laboratory facilities, methods, equipment, safety practices, and human subjects research, and compliance with MUSC, SCTR, state and federal guidelines. Responsibilities Support SCTR Research Nexus Laboratory clinical research by performing sample processing, testing, and shipping according to clinical trial documents (35%). Prepare and maintain records for all procedures, assist in reviewing and reporting data, and document atypical findings for investigators, sponsors, and monitors (25%). Adhere to laboratory safety standards, maintain organization and supply inventory, and help develop policies, procedures and protocol instructions (15%). Perform complex mathematical calculations, reagent preparation, dilutions, and procedures requiring aseptic technique or special handling; assist in qualitative/quantitative tests (10%). Provide cross-coverage for COVID-19 biorepository including specimen processing, documentation, and release to approved investigators (10%). Perform other duties as required, including training new employees in laboratory procedures and methods (5%). Qualifications A bachelor’s degree in a related medical or scientific discipline, or an associate degree plus equivalent technical training and two years of journey-level work experience in a related field. Master’s degree or equivalent additional experience preferred. Knowledge of clinical trial protocols, laboratory safety, data entry, and record keeping. Ability to work a 40-hour week with occasional overtime and shift flexibility. Physical Requirements Continuous: work 6-8 hours per shift in upright, seated, mobile, or walking positions; lift and carry up to 30 lbs.; climb stairs; use both hands and legs; perform repetitive motions; maintain vision, hearing, and sensory functions. Frequent: lift objects up to 30 lbs. from floor to 72 inches, lower objects from 72 inches, and push/pull up to 50 lbs.; work in cold temperature extremes; perform ‘pinching’ operations; work rotating shifts, overtime. Infrequent: lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs. a distance of five floors or to outlying buildings; maintain 20/40 vision corrected; see and recognize objects, color discrimination, depth perception, peripheral vision, hearing acuity. Must be qualified physically for respirator use, independently and annually; have a valid driver’s license; be computer literate.
