Heavy Equipment Mechanic

This role focuses on inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and rebuilding heavy mobile mining equipment in a fast-paced service environment. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic works with a wide range of mining machinery, performing major component replacements, overhauls, and complex troubleshooting of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems. The position requires strong technical skills, hands-on experience with OEM mining equipment, and the ability to work independently in both shop and field settings.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, diagnose, and repair mobile mining equipment, including performing major component replacements, overhauls, and complete machine rebuilds.
• Troubleshoot and repair 12/24-volt electrical systems, including wiring, components, and controls, using schematics and diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems, including pumps, valves, motors, and related components, using technical documentation and schematics.
• Perform mechanical repairs on heavy equipment, including engines, transmissions, and driveline components, with a focus on frac transmission disassembly, assembly, and rebuilds.
• Carry out welding and fabrication tasks, including arc welding, metal inert gas (MIG) welding, arc gouging, and use of oxyacetylene torches to repair and modify equipment.
• Conduct preventive maintenance and service activities on heavy equipment to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Use computer-based diagnostic tools and software, including ET and OEM platforms, to troubleshoot equipment issues and document findings.
• Utilize systems such as SIS, My Komatsu, and other OEM or CMMS platforms to access technical information, record maintenance activities, and support accurate documentation.
• Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals to perform accurate and efficient repairs.
• Operate a service vehicle safely to travel to job sites and perform field repairs and maintenance without direct supervision.
• Maintain an organized and adequate inventory of personal tools necessary to perform assigned tasks effectively.
• Follow all safety procedures and maintain a safe working record while working in shop and field environments.
• Work with a sense of urgency to meet or exceed customer expectations, ensuring high-quality workmanship and timely completion of tasks.
• Adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced service environment, managing multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 3 years of experience repairing mobile mining equipment.
• Minimum 3 years of experience with mining equipment from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, Sandvik, and Liebherr.
• Hands-on experience with machine rebuilds, overhauls, and major component replacements on heavy equipment.
• Mechanic experience with frac transmissions, including disassembly, assembly, and rebuild.
• Experience in welding and fabrication, including arc welding, metal inert gas (MIG) welding, arc gouging, and use of an oxyacetylene torch.
• Technical experience with hydraulic pumps, valves, and motors.
• Experience in mining or rock quarry maintenance.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot 12/24-volt electrical systems.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot hydraulic systems.
• Computer literacy, including experience using laptops for equipment troubleshooting.
• Experience using Service Information System (SIS).
• Experience using My Komatsu or similar OEM systems.
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and blueprints.
• Mechanical repair skills, including engine and equipment maintenance.
• Proficiency in general mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and preventive maintenance work.
• Proficient in the use of computers and related software such as Word and Excel.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a high level of detail orientation and accuracy.
• Ability to operate a service vehicle safely and effectively.
• Valid driver's license with the ability to maintain a clean driving record.
• Ability to lift more than 50 pounds safely.
• Ability to work independently in the field without supervision.
• Ability to perform duties with a strong sense of urgency and commitment to exceeding customer expectations.
• Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, fast-paced service environment.
• Demonstrated safe working record.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• OEM experience with major mining equipment manufacturers is highly desired.
• Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
• Experience using ET (electronic troubleshooting programs for Caterpillar or similar equipment).
• Training with documentation from OEMs such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, or Volvo.
• Experience with cranes, forklifts, and related heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
• Experience in diesel engines and diesel-powered equipment maintenance.
• Experience with equipment maintenance, fabrication, and maintenance repair in industrial environments.
• Ability to maintain a well-organized personal tool inventory appropriate for heavy equipment maintenance tasks.

Work Environment

This role follows a 11-days-on, 6-days-off rotation with typical working hours from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You will work in a shop-based environment with both indoor and outdoor responsibilities, supporting heavy mining equipment in a field location. The position involves physically demanding tasks, including lifting more than 50 pounds and working around large machinery, tools, and welding equipment. You will regularly use laptops, diagnostic software, OEM systems, and standard mechanical and welding tools while adhering to strict safety standards in a dynamic, fast-paced maintenance setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $72800.00 - $100000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
