Principal Platform Software Engineer

We’re looking for software engineers with strong SRE instincts to help build and operate the GitHub Enterprise platform at scale. This role is for developers who care about reliable systems, clean APIs, automation, observability, and production‑quality code. You’ll own and evolve platform components, improve service contracts for multi‑tenant use, debug issues across service boundaries, and build resilience patterns that make the platform safer, faster, and easier for engineering teams to consume. You’ll design, code, test, optimize, and support software that has real operational impact. Key Responsibilities Platform Software Development: Lead cross‑team evolution of middleware patterns or runtimes to standardize interoperability at scale. Define and enforce versioning, deprecation, and rollout strategies that minimize downstream breaks. Drive shared observability baselines (SLOs, error budgets) and resilience patterns across several services. Software Development and Coding – Design, Testing, and Optimization: Design software solutions and analyze requirements to achieve business and operational goals. Adhere to and improve execution of all phases of the software development lifecycle; provide guidance and coaching to engineers. Develop new software features and enhancements, leading design specifications, ensuring accessibility, and producing documentation. Lead code reviews in multiple areas to help drive improvements. Debug and troubleshoot to identify and fix complex software issues. Develop fixes for identified issues. Implement comprehensive software testing, quality assurance processes, error logging, monitoring, and observability for effective debugging. Conduct performance profiling and optimize code for scalability. Troubleshoot and resolve complex API functionality and integration issues. Implement complex API versioning, lifecycle, and interoperability strategies. Software Architecture – System Structural Design: Implement and contribute to software, systems, and services, ensuring review by managers or senior leaders. Provide technical guidance and coaching to less experienced developers. Contribute to periodic reviews and ensure adherence to architectural standards. Collaborate with stakeholders to align work with software architecture. Implement performance optimization and scalability strategies. Occasionally conduct technology research and evaluation for potential architectural changes. Issue/Defect Collaboration – Product Support: Collaborate with stakeholders to understand customer issues and align solutions. Provide advanced technical guidance and support to customers regarding reported issues. Advocate for customers’ interests and suggest product enhancements based on feedback. Ensure timely resolution of issues and effective communication for customer satisfaction. Implement processes for handling and training on customer issues and defects. Investigate and troubleshoot complex maintenance issues with short‑ and long‑term solutions. Practices and Standards Compliance – Security and Compliance: Collaborate to follow development practices and coding standards, providing coaching to junior members. Participate in peer review processes and ensure code quality and adherence to acceptance criteria. Share advanced knowledge of industry best practices and apply them to processes. Implement secure coding practices to prevent vulnerabilities. Development Operations – System Maintenance: Perform periodic maintenance and testing operations for systems that require upgrading or patching. Drive improvements, ensure automation, testing, and debugging of systems for reliability. Planning & Execution: Manage and coordinate moderately complex tasks, monitor timelines and deliverables, and delegate efficiently. Collaboration & Partnership: Collaborate across the organization to align expectations and achieve shared objectives. Problem Solving: Identify and address moderate issues by analyzing data to identify solutions. Continuous Learning: Pursue learning opportunities, stay abreast of trends, and mentor junior team members. Continuous Improvement: Develop ideas and collaborate on process improvements, evaluating impact. Performance and Development: Contribute to talent development by participating in candidate interviews and assessments. Qualifications Experience building production services, troubleshooting complex systems, and improving reliability. Comfortable working across code, APIs, logs, metrics, incidents, and customer issues. Strong knowledge of operating systems, networking, and large‑scale distributed systems. Experience with observability tools, SLOs, error budgets, and resilience patterns. Strong programming skills in a modern language such as Go, Python, or Java. Salary Range (US) Hiring Range in USD from: $104,500 – $234,600 per year. May be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.
