Senior Organizer

Based in Lawrence, KS

This is a full-time position to work for a newly-organized local of faculty and academic staff in Lawrence, KS. The first year of the position is grant funded, with the expectation to continue as a long-term position dependent on local growth. United Academics of KU ratified its first contract in March 2026, and is seeking an experienced Senior Organizer to lead organizing, bargaining, and representational work as the local implements its first contract and moves into a new phase. A successful Senior Organizer will play a leadership role in a wide variety of work, including issue campaigns, recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists, implementing member-to-member outreach drives, representing members in grievances, and supporting negotiations for successor agreements. Significant knowledge of and experience in union organizing and representation is required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Willing to work long and irregular hours
• Dedicated to social and economic justice
• Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver’s license
• Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
• Have strong communications skills
• Must be competent in basic computer/web functions and social media platforms (experience with database and mass communications platforms is a plus)
• Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
• Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from local leadership and affiliate partners
• At least 4 years of previous labor organizing and/or representational work (a background in higher education issues is preferred)

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Organize and mobilize workers in support of the local’s goals
• Coordinate with and take direction from local elected leadership and affiliate partners
• Conduct one-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
• Ensure collection, maintenance, and reporting of high-quality organizing and membership data
• Lead efforts to grow membership and member engagement, win issue fights, and negotiate strong successor contracts
• Mentor, train, and develop members’ capacity to carry out the above

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary range is $60,000 to $70,000 depending on experience. Excellent individual health benefits, paid leave (includes vacation, personal, and sick days), and expense reimbursements.
