Vacancy: Assignment Type(s): 10 Month/Year - 4.5 Hrs/Day Essential Duties/Responsibilities Performs technical and complex clerical duties involved with the selection, ordering, receipt, processing, cataloging and circulation of library books, textbooks, audiovisual materials and other instructional materials which support the K-12 curriculum; Assists students and teachers in locating books or in using reference materials, including computer and on-line resources, for research projects or leisure reading; May provide literature and library skills presentations for K-12 students; assists students and teachers in the operation of new computer programs, CD ROM, the Internet and other equipment as needed; Catalogs, classifies and assigns subject headings to books and other instructional materials; Maintains computer databases, core literature collection and extended literature collections; card catalogs and necessary files and records; Reviews, selects and/or makes recommendations for acquisition of books and other instructional materials to build and improve library and multi-media collections; Generates, using computer or typewriter, a variety of materials, such as purchase requisitions, book lists, circulation statistics, catalog cards, work orders, correspondence and reports; Arranges book displays, bulletin boards and exhibits; Receives, logs, operates and schedules use of audiovisual equipment and materials; Checks out books and other circulating materials and collects monies for fines and lost books; Examines books in need of repair and may repair torn or otherwise damaged pages where feasible; May monitor students' use of the Internet; may orient, train and supervise students and parent volunteers in the use of the library and media center; Conducts perpetual and periodic inventories; Maintains order and discipline among students using the Instructional Media Center. Minimum Entrance Qualifications Experience: One year of general clerical experience including some experience and/or training in library work; or, two years, or sixty units of college level course work may be substituted for the clerical experience requirement; experience working with K-12 students and coursework in child development desirable. Education: Graduation from High School or equivalent required. Completion of at least two years of study (48 units) at an institution of higher education, or Associates or higher degree. Job Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Dewey Decimal Classification System and standard library terminology practices, procedures, and reference sources; Modern office methods, practices and procedures including correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Ability to: Use and apply computer software programs related to the operation of a library; Become familiar with the District's curriculum and related literature, authors and reference material appropriate for K-12 students; Perform difficult and complex technical and clerical library work without immediate supervision; Maintain order and discipline among students; Operate standard office equipment including personal computer, software, printer, typewriter, and audiovisual equipment; Operate spreadsheet and word processing computer software; and Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Dental Insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family dental insurance. Vision Care Insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family vision insurance. Holidays: Up to fourteen paid holidays per year. Life Insurance: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 30.0 or more hours per week shall be eligible to participate in the District-paid coverage for family life insurance. Vacation: Employees with one to three years of service earn 12 vacation days per year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn vacation on a pro rata basis). The number of vacation days earned increases with longevity up to 20 days per year after 15 years of service. Sick Leave: One day per month, cumulative from year to year (employees working less than 12 months shall earn sick leave on a pro rata basis). Retirement: Employees holding regular/permanent positions at 4 or more hours daily AND at least 20 hours weekly are covered by Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and Social Security. Contributions are made by both the employee and employer. Employees holding positions that are fewer than 4 hours per day or 20 hours per week are enrolled in APPLE, an alternative to Social Security. Contributions are made by both the employee and employer. Salary Step Movement: First day of fiscal year (July 1st) for those employees in working status at least 75% of work year. Longevity Compensation: Upon completion of 7, 10, 14, 20, 24, and 29 years of service from the hire date, employees receive an additional 2 1/2% salary increase.
