School Mental Health TherapistReports to: Director of Special Education & Student ServicesWork Schedule: 4.0 hours per day – 180 days per year (Monday-Friday)Salary: Per Non-Exempt/Represented Salary Schedule - Non-Exempt/Represented 2 at Summary:This position will provide comprehensive school mental health services to parents, students and school staff, addressing barriers that limit a student from receiving full benefit from their educational experience. Respond to referrals from school administration, parents, teachers, the Student Support Team, the Special Education Committee and others by providing direct services and by assisting families in accessing appropriate community resources. They will work collaboratively with the Lead MTSS Coordinator, COSA on providing therapeutic services for students who are experiencing mental health challenges, trauma, and chronic stress.Minimum Qualifications:Master's degree in counselingPreferred license in the state of Washington in counseling or social workValid Washington State Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate preferredExcellent oral and written communication skillsWashington State driver's license or evidence of mobilitySuccessful experience at appropriate grade level preferredExperience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity preferredSuccessful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint ClearanceProof of Immunization (if born 1/1/57 or later)I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control ActCompletion of all district-required training within thirty (30) calendar days from hire dateDesired Skills:Knowledge and skills for direct and indirect intervention including: counseling on an individual, group, or family basisAbility to consult with administrators, teachers, parents, and other professionals about student problems and appropriate change strategiesAbility to network with school programs and community agencies to provide essential services for families and childrenAbility to understand the knowledge, skills, and processes required for effective casework practiceDemonstrate knowledge of the mental health profession including associated laws (IDEA, ADA, compulsory attendance, etc.)Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and professional issues and standardsDemonstrate knowledge of foundations of school psychology and the role and function of mental health therapy as it relates to a school settingDemonstrate knowledge of understanding of child development, psychopathology, social and environmental conditioning, cultural diversity, and family systemsEssential Job Functions:This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:Provide mental health therapy using evidence based practiceProvide crisis management for students and familiesServe on student support teams and special education committeesReview student records to identify previous barriers and/or interventionsConduct parent interviews to acquire socio-developmental information as needed for special education referralAnalyze information gained through record reviews and interviews to determine environmental impacts and appropriate resource needs; integrate gained information into a written report and oral presentationAttend and participate in Manifestation meetingsInterview students and parents to discuss issues related to non-attendance and develop a plan of actionAssist the school in following school board regulations for excessive absences and truancy; attend student support team meetings and court interventionDevelop and implement professional development training for educational staff and parents, as requestedProvide individual and/or group counselingRespond to referrals requesting verification of residenceParticipate in professional development activities aimed at current trends and best practices for the provision of comprehensive school social work servicesConduct home visits as a method to access the family and conduct interviews in response to school referralsMaintain an ongoing liaison with community agencies and other resources to meet student needs; refers parents and student to agencies when appropriateMaintain consistent presence at assigned worksite and regular work hoursProfessionally interact with students, staff, and publicEstablish and maintain professional contacts with studentsComply with all district policies and proceduresComply with the Code of Professional ConductPerform related duties as assignedWork Environment:Work is typically performed in and around a student learning environment; may be exposed to childhood diseases; may be required to balance and crouch, crawl, bend, or kneel; may be required to stand for prolonged periods; may be exposed to high noise levels; and may experience a multitude of demands and changing priorities with frequent interruptions.Evaluation:The School Mental Health Therapist shall be evaluated periodically by the Building Principal and Lead MTSS Coordinator COSA pursuant to the currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria.
