This is a full-time, indefinite trust fund position at grade IS-12, open to all candidates eligible to work in the United States.The role serves as the senior 3D exhibition designer for the museum, supervising the exhibition design team and acting as lead designer on assigned projects. Responsibilities include conceiving and overseeing original exhibition designs covering spatial layouts, furniture, media environments, graphics, and object placements; preparing construction and fabrication documents; managing all design phases from concept through fabrication; reviewing proposals with conservators, registrars, and collections managers to ensure safe and correct object display; and serving as contracting officer’s technical representative for design-related procurement.The museum is entering an active period of gallery transformation, and the selected candidate will play a central role in shaping visitor experience across its collection of Asian and American art.Requirements:* Undergraduate or graduate degree in commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, interior design, visual communication, or a related field* Minimum one year of specialized experience at or above the GS-11 level* Demonstrated experience as sole or lead designer on museum exhibitions, with knowledge of museum exhibition standards, procedures, and terminology* Proficiency in one or more CAD programs including AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit, or Adobe Creative Suite* Experience managing full design process from concept through design development* Experience directing the work of others, either as a supervisor or in a coordinative role* Knowledge of accessibility standards including the Americans with Disabilities Act* Strong communication and presentation skills across diverse audiencesCompensation: Trust fund benefits include health, dental, vision, life insurance, transit benefits, childcare, annual and sick leave, 403b retirement plan, and flexible spending accounts.*Editorially sourced — This listing was identified and summarized by Pitchly Hire from the Smithsonian Institution’s public careers page.
