Respiratory Therapist

Overview Altru Rehabilitation Hospital, part of Altru Health System, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team in our rehabilitation-focused care setting. Responsibilities In this role, you will deliver comprehensive respiratory care to adult and, when applicable, pediatric patients with acute and chronic cardiopulmonary conditions, supporting our mission of patient-centered, community-focused care. Working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, you will assess patients’ respiratory status, develop and implement individualized care plans, and provide treatments such as oxygen therapy, aerosolized medications, chest physiotherapy, and airway clearance techniques. You will manage and monitor patients on non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, adjust ventilator settings based on clinical status and provider orders, and respond promptly to changes in patient condition and respiratory emergencies. The Respiratory Therapist will perform and interpret diagnostic tests including arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, and bedside pulmonary function measurements, documenting findings accurately in the electronic medical record. You will educate patients and families on respiratory conditions, equipment use, breathing exercises, and disease self-management, helping to support safe transitions of care and improved quality of life. In partnership with physicians, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, and other members of the multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to care planning, participate in rounds, and provide input on respiratory protocols and best practices that advance clinical outcomes and safety. Responsibilities also include proper setup, calibration, and maintenance of respiratory equipment; adherence to infection prevention and regulatory standards; and active participation in quality improvement initiatives and clinical education.
