Staff Machine Learning Scientist

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and productionize causal ML systems influencing marketplace decisions across New Verticals.
• Build uplift and heterogeneous treatment effect models for consumer lifecycle value, promotions, retention, and reactivation.
• Develop counterfactual evaluation frameworks for ranking, recommendations, search, promotions, substitutions, and marketplace interventions.
• Connect experimentation, observational data, and ML decisioning to support marketplace tradeoffs.
• Design surrogate metrics and early indicators that preserve long-term marketplace health.
• Select and apply causal inference and econometric methods in partnership with analytics and econometrics leaders.
• Translate causal models into production systems for ranking, targeting, budget allocation, inventory-aware discovery, and consumer growth.
• Promote rigorous causal reasoning and debugging of causal claims across ML teams.

Requirements

• Deep practical experience with causal inference, econometrics, experimentation, or causal ML.
• Experience shipping production models or decision systems, ideally in high-scale settings such as consumer marketplaces, advertising, recommendations, search, pricing, promotions, logistics, or fintech.
• Strong judgment regarding tradeoffs between randomized experiments, observational estimation, and model-based decisioning.
• Practical knowledge of doubly robust estimation, double machine learning, instrumental variables, difference-in-differences, CUPED, uplift modeling, contextual bandits, and off-policy evaluation.
• Strong ML engineering ability, including building reliable pipelines, training models, rigorous evaluation, and production collaboration with platform teams.
• Strong product judgment and ability to connect causal methods to business decisions.
• Ability to work across functions with ML engineers, economists, data scientists, product managers, and business leaders.
