Embedded Systems Test Engineer Avionics

$80k - $120k
Full-time

Millennium International

Salary: $80,000 - 120,000 per year Requirements:

  • Strong embedded C or C++ programming skills, with working knowledge of assembly language; PowerPC and/or Intel x86 assembly experience is preferred.
  • Experience developing low-level software that directly interfaces with board-level hardware on PowerPC and/or Intel x86 processors.
  • Strong understanding of processor architecture, including registers, memory addressing, memory-mapped I/O, interrupts and exceptions, timers, cache behavior, bus interfaces, and boot/initialization sequences.
  • Ability to read electronic schematics, component data sheets, memory maps, and register definitions and translate them into functioning diagnostic software.
  • Understanding of volatile and nonvolatile memory technologies, including RAM and FLASH.
  • Experience with board-level diagnostics, Built-In Test (BIT), manufacturing test, acceptance test, or hardware verification software.
  • Experience debugging embedded hardware/software interactions at the register and signal level.
  • Ability to independently investigate unfamiliar hardware, determine how devices and interfaces operate, and define practical methods to verify them.
  • Ability to work effectively with legacy systems where source code or documentation may be incomplete, inconsistent, or unavailable.
  • Experience with Honeywell PRIMUS EPIC or APEX avionics hardware and software.
  • Detailed knowledge of Honeywell HBIT architecture, execution, fault reporting, and diagnostic philosophy.
  • Experience with avionics PBIT, CBIT, IBIT, or HBIT implementations.
  • Experience developing test software for avionics Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) or Line Replaceable Modules (LRMs).
  • Experience with legacy Intel 486, Pentium II, or Mobile Pentium hardware and associated board-level diagnostic software.
  • Experience with safety-critical or high-reliability embedded systems.
  • Experience with Ethernet MAC/PHY diagnostics, JTAG-based debugging, FPGA/CPLD interfaces, and hardware/software integration.
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline is preferred; equivalent demonstrated experience may be considered in lieu of a specific degree.
  • Five or more years of embedded software development experience is preferred.
  • Significant experience developing software that directly interfaces with board-level hardware is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to relocate to Lees Summit, MO 64063 before starting work is preferred.
  • Bachelors degree preferred.
  • Embedded software experience preferred.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, build, debug, document, and support embedded diagnostic and functional test software for PowerPC- and Intel x86-based hardware platforms.
  • Review schematics, processor manuals, memory maps, interface specifications, component data sheets, and existing source code to determine effective hardware test approaches.
  • Create low-level tests that interact with hardware directly rather than depending only on higher-level operating system services.
  • Develop and validate diagnostics for memory, FLASH, Ethernet, interrupt controllers, timers, watchdogs, processor and peripheral registers, memory-mapped I/O, communications interfaces, video controllers, discrete/digital I/O, board-level buses, and other platform resources.
  • Build memory diagnostics that can identify address, data, stuck-bit, coupling, and device-level faults; create FLASH diagnostics for identification, addressing, integrity, and read/write/erase verification where permitted by the architecture.
  • Develop Ethernet controller diagnostics that verify initialization, register access, transmit/receive behavior, loopback operation, interrupts, and interface status.
  • Create interrupt and watchdog diagnostics that verify generation, masking, prioritization, servicing, clearing, timeout behavior, reset behavior, and fault detection.
  • Develop or adapt startup, initialization, and processor-specific assembly routines needed to establish and manage the hardware test environment.
  • Troubleshoot hardware/software interactions using JTAG, hardware debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, Ethernet test equipment, and other lab instruments.
  • Evaluate existing hardware and software designs to determine how built-in-test capabilities can be reused, adapted, or incorporated across supported processor platforms.
  • Document test algorithms, software interfaces, hardware dependencies, expected results, fault conditions, and diagnostic coverage, and take part in design reviews, integration, troubleshooting, and formal verification activities.
