Job Title: Material Handler Job Description

The Material Handler supports the full manufacturing process by safely moving, storing, and tracking materials from receiving through production and shipping. This role operates various material handling equipment, maintains accurate real-time inventory records, and ensures materials are properly packaged, stored, and supplied to production areas.

Responsibilities

• Move material in support of the manufacturing process from receiving through production and shipping using forklifts, hand jacks, mobile carts, and other material movement equipment.

• Safely load and unload materials onto and from trucks, pallets, skids, storage racks, and other designated areas.

• Coordinate the palletization and proper packing of material for storage or large shipping orders to ensure safe transport and efficient handling.

• Maintain material supply levels for production processes by using Kanban systems, flag systems, pick lists, and clear communication with production staff.

• Place material in appropriate inventory or in-process locations according to established procedures and work instructions.

• Ensure real-time inventory transactions are completed using computer systems and wireless RF scanners to maintain accurate inventory records.

• Maintain first-in / first-out (FIFO) practices to support proper inventory rotation and material usage.

• Observe and inspect material in storage areas for signs of inadequate packaging, deterioration, or cleanliness issues and report or correct as needed.

• Carry out all inventory transactions accurately and in accordance with procedures and work instructions.

• Monitor material storage areas for unauthorized material movements and report discrepancies promptly.

• Assist with cycle counting and other inventory verification activities as needed.

• Support shipping and receiving activities, including picking, packing, loading, and unloading materials and finished goods.

• Use hand tools and basic equipment as needed for packaging, assembly support, or material preparation.

• Perform visual inspections of materials and packaging to ensure quality and compliance with standards.

Essential Skills

• Ability to safely operate industrial forklifts, including sit-down forklifts, as well as hand jacks and other devices used to push, pull, lift, stack, tier, and move material.

• Ability to safely operate equipment such as shrink wrappers, banding equipment, auto tape dispensers, and other related equipment used in material handling, packaging, and storage.

• Prior training or certification for forklift operation.

• Prior experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment.

• Experience with material handling, including loading, unloading, picking, packing, palletizing, and staging materials.

• Ability to use RF scanners and computer systems to perform real-time inventory and material movement transactions.

• Experience in shipping and receiving, including warehouse inventory activities.

• Capability to perform visual inspection of materials and packaging for quality and accuracy.

• Ability to follow written procedures, work instructions, and safety guidelines.

• Comfort working with hand tools and basic production or packaging equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Prior experience using ERP or other computerized systems for inventory and material movement utilizing bar codes and scanners is preferred.

• Experience with assembly, production, or machine operation in a manufacturing environment.

• Familiarity with sewing or sewing machine operation is a plus in related production areas.

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in inventory transactions and documentation.

• Effective communication skills to coordinate with production, shipping, and warehouse staff.

• Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-focused environment.

• Comfort working in a structured environment that uses Kanban, flag systems, and pick lists to manage material flow.

Work Environment

This is a second-shift position with working hours from 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The facility is very clean, organized, mild in temperature, and well lit, providing a comfortable and orderly work setting. The environment is relatively quiet, and employees may listen to headphones with one earbud during work, subject to safety guidelines. The role is based in a warehouse and manufacturing setting that uses forklifts, pallet jacks, RF scanners, shrink wrappers, banding equipment, auto tape dispensers, and other material handling and packaging equipment. Casual dress is required, including gym shoes, along with appropriate eye protection as part of standard safety practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Cleveland, OH.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.54 - $20.54/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
