Assistant Electrical Inspector, SR-16

Inspects and tests electrical installations and equipment in buildings and structures of limited size and scope for compliance with plans and specifications, electrical codes and other pertinent ordinances and accepted safety standards; and performs other related duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Building Division in Hilo.

Examples of duties include:

• Reviewing applications for electrical permits, checking and verifying information recorded on application with related building permits on file, and verifying permit fees according to established rates schedule.
• Reviewing less complex electrical plans to determine whether proposed wiring and equipment meet code requirements.
• Inspecting electrical installations and equipment in existing and new residential and small commercial and industrial buildings for compliance with the provisions of the County electrical codes and ordinances, and with the National Electrical Codes.
• Checking type, size, and number of wires, boxes, outlets, and conduits being installed.
• Checking load on feeder lines by conducting necessary tests.
• Checking wiring of appliances and equipment.
• Issuing correction notices, stop work orders, notices of violations, orders, and following up to see that violations are corrected.
• Making recommendations to electrical contractors or owners concerning the correct methods of installing electrical wiring or equipment.
• Rejecting or approving electrical installations and issuing certificates of approval when work is approved in its final phases.
• Inspecting installation of solar water heater and photovoltaic systems for compliance with County Codes, National Electrical Codes, engineered plans, and specifications.
• Inputting and checking permit status updates in the permitting software system and/or other applications.
• Consulting with supervisors in cases of doubt over interpretation of codes or ordinances, or in cases of disagreement with electrical contractors.
• Assisting higher level inspectors by inspecting phases of large and complex multi-storied buildings.
• Keeping work records and preparing reports of inspections made.
• Checking for compliance to contracting and trade licensing laws.
• Assisting with investigation of premises where fires occurred to determine whether fires were due to electrical causes.

Minimum qualification requirements include:

• Graduation from high school.
• Four (4) years of experience in the supervision and/or installation, alteration, repair, and maintenance of electrical equipment, wiring, and apparatus as a journey-level electrician.
• Possession of a State of Hawai'i Journey-level or Supervising Electrician's License at time of filing.
• Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing.
