Summary The VA Central Iowa Health Care System is recruiting for 1 full‑time Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) for the Diagnostic Imaging Service Line. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Education: No specific educational requirements for this occupation Licensure or Certification: Not required for this occupation, but strongly desirable at GS‑6 or above Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2 - section D - paragraph 5a Grade Determinations: GS‑9 Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) Experience Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, directly related to the duties of the position and fully meeting the KSAs at that level Specialized Experience: Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations on multiple body areas, including abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum; perform vascular studies; assist radiologists with biopsy procedures and surgical procedures; provide training and supervision; develop policies and procedures Technical KSAs: Knowledge of complex examination and treatment procedures; ability to conduct performance improvement projects; knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements; effective communication professional with employees at varying grade levels; staff development and training capabilities Certification: Registration by CCI or ARDMS highly desirable; BCLS and ACLS certifications desirable Preferred Experience: Abd‑OB/GYN and/or vascular registry Duties The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers This approach empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well‑being Operate in a model with three core elements—creating personalized health plans, fostering healing relationships and environments, and connecting veterans to community Align with the VHA Mission Statement to honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well‑being Coordinate technical procedures using ultrasonic waves for diagnosis of disease on the clinic or inpatient unit Understand principles of ultrasound and specialized equipment; evaluate scan acceptability Control technical factors on the ultrasound unit (time, gain, amplitude, velocity, frequency, attenuation, absorption, reflection, scattering, refraction, diffraction) Select appropriate transducer types and define focal settings Set up and adjust equipment, manually maneuver the transducer to perform examinations Align and position patients correctly; assist patient movement to and from wheelchairs, carts, and tables Prioritize critical and emergency procedures when needed Perform ultrasonography studies; record and prepare media for interpretation by radiologist Maintain patient records in the Vista radiology package Coordinate scheduling and explain procedures to patients during studies Obtain pertinent diagnostic examinations for physicians to correlate with clinical history Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations across body areas and vascular studies including carotid duplex, ABI, arterial duplex, venous duplex, renal artery duplex, and visceral vascular exams Perform pre‑operative vein mappings for vascular surgeons and chronic venous insufficiency studies Assist radiologists with biopsy procedures determining location, depth, needle angle Assist in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations; enforce sterile technique Differentiates artifacts from normal/pathological processes; consult with radiologist to determine diagnosis Recognize diagnostic scans and discuss with radiologist Recognize JCAHO and other regulatory requirements Communicate effectively with employees at varying grade levels Perform other duties as assigned within scope of MIT technologist Requires 25% travel Valid driver’s license required Benefits Work Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 7:30 a.m.‑4:00 p.m.; on‑call required (rotated among technologists) Recruitment Incentive (Sign‑on Bonus): Not authorized Permanent Change of Station (Relocation Assistance): Not authorized Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time per year (13‑26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays) Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment—up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days—full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000 may be eligible up to 25% of eligible childcare costs (max $416.66 monthly) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contribution Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care (many federal programs transferable into retirement) Telework: Not available;
