Heavy Equipment Mechanic IIIThe successful candidate will maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while adhering to all safety standards, environmental regulations, and landfill operating procedures. This role plays a vital part in ensuring equipment reliability, operational continuity, and overall safety.The Heavy Equipment Mechanic III may supervise and assist in leading, training, planning, and coordinating the operations of the Fink Road Landfill maintenance shop. In this role, the incumbent performs preventive maintenance, scheduled servicing, diagnostics, and repairs heavy equipment, fleet vehicles, and landfill support systems. Primary responsibilities include inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic, electrical, drivetrain, and air brake systems to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of all assigned equipment. This position requires the ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions, respond to breakdowns, and perform emergency repairs to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency.This position is subject to overtime, shift work, standby, and callback assignments. Performs related duties as assigned.Typical TasksLead, train and assist journey level and semi-skilled mechanics; assign work to mechanics; assist higher level supervisory and management staff in the day-to-day supervision activities;Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical difficulties on landfill heavy equipment and Road Maintenance Equipment, and a variety of other diesel and gasoline powered equipment as required;Receive information from users; evaluate equipment problem; and determine action required for facilitating repair;Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for landfill heavy equipment, and Road Maintenance Equipment; weld, braze, cut, shape and fasten metal parts; fabricate and weld vehicle frames, chassis, and exhaust systems;Use welding equipment, drill presses, lathes, grinders and a large assortment of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments required for journey level fabrication work;Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, valves and air and hydraulic systems;Tune up engines, replacing electrical and electronic parts; clean and adjust fuel injection systems;Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment;Diagnose and repair such components as generators, alternators, distributors, relays, lights and switches;Maintain and repair air conditioning and climate systems;Make roadside repairs as required;Communicate with management and supervisors, County vendors and County employees regarding status of fleet or other issues;Assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials;Maintain work, time, and material records;Diagnose and repair various electronic and computer-controlled devices;Diagnose and repair emissions systems; andFollow up on Department of Transportation inspections to ensure vehicles are within required guidelines.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)Skills/AbilitiesAdvises mechanics on methods of repair and assists in more difficult tasks;Develop standards and controls for preventive maintenance programs;Keep maintenance of records through the Division's software program;Collect data and reports for budget requests for new equipment;Perform skilled welding and fabrication work;Understand and carry out verbal and written directions;Perform complex equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of equipment for both major and minor repair work;Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs;Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.KnowledgePrinciples of operation, cost factors, and methods of repairing gasoline, diesel and alternate fuel vehicle (CNG), as well as construction and maintenance of these pieces of equipment;Shop equipment, tools and diagnostic equipment and their use;Ignition, carburetion, fuel injection, super-charged systems and hydraulic systems;Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment;Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in welding and fabrication work;Operating and repair characteristics of landfill heavy equipment and County road maintenance equipment;Safe work practices.We recognize your time is valuable, please only apply if you meet the following required qualifications.Education/ExperienceFour (4) years of increasingly responsible experience performing automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair duties comparable to those of a Heavy Equipment Mechanic ANDPossess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License; ANDPossess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver's License with tanker, air brakes and doubles & triples endorsements. Possess California State Brake Certificate, Lamp Certificate, and Refrigeration/Recycling Air Conditioning Certificate; ANDIn compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, possession of an appropriate Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Certification is required within one year of appointment. Failure to obtain the required certification may result in release from probation or termination; ANDAbility to obtain any future regulatory certification requirements;AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWINGEquivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas, CNG and diesel powered equipment; ORPossession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Vehicle Inspection Pollution Controls licenseProof of education/certifications is required for verification purposes at the time of application.
