Big Sky Transportation District is seeking an experienced Transportation Director to lead transportation planning, infrastructure coordination and regional collaboration in one of Montanas most distinctive communities.

In this highly visible leadership role, you will help shape the future of roads, bridges, sidewalks, pathways, trails and active transportation infrastructure throughout the Big Sky area. You will bring government agencies, neighboring jurisdictions and community partners together around a shared vision for a safer, better-connected and more efficient transportation system.

Your recommendations will influence project priorities, funding decisions and long-term investments affecting Big Skys residents, employees, businesses and visitors.

What Youll Do

• 
  

  Serve as the Districts primary transportation liaison with Gallatin and Madison counties, the Montana Department of Transportation, neighboring jurisdictions and other regional partners.



• 
  

  Coordinate the planning, design and delivery of road, street, bridge, sidewalk, pathway and trail projects.



• 
  

  Lead or participate in technical advisory committees and regional transportation working groups.



• 
  

  Build productive relationships with local, state and federal agencies, community organizations and other stakeholders.



• 
  

  Guide corridor studies, preliminary engineering, environmental reviews and related planning activities.



• 
  

  Evaluate and prioritize projects for potential inclusion in the State Transportation Improvement Program.



• 
  

  Advance pedestrian, bicycle, pathway, trail and other non-motorized transportation projects.



• 
  

  Improve safe, accessible connections among residential areas, commercial centers, resorts and recreational destinations.



• 
  

  Identify and pursue federal, state and private transportation funding opportunities.



• 
  

  Manage awarded grants, including compliance, reporting, budgets and deliverable tracking.



• 
  

  Lead updates to transportation master plans and integrated transportation plans.



• 
  

  Establish performance measures and provide data-driven recommendations to the Board of Directors.



• 
  

  Evaluate transportation governance models and potential long-term funding mechanisms.



• 
  

  Support wildlife-crossing and transportation-demand-management initiatives related to regional infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

• 
  

  Bachelors degree in transportation planning, civil engineering, public administration or a related field.



• 
  

  At least five years of progressively responsible experience in transportation planning, project management, civil infrastructure or interagency coordination.



• 
  

  Demonstrated success working with multiple government agencies, community stakeholders and project partners.



• 
  

  Strong written, verbal, presentation and relationship-building skills.



• 
  

  Familiarity with federal and state transportation programs and funding processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• 
  

  Masters degree in transportation planning, civil engineering, public administration or a related field.



• 
  

  Experience with transportation planning in a rural, mountain or resort community.



• 
  

  Knowledge of Montana transportation agencies, regulations and funding mechanisms.



• 
  

  Experience planning or developing pedestrian, bicycle, pathway or trail infrastructure.



• 
  

  AICP, Professional Engineer (P.E.) or another relevant professional certification.
