About the role:

We are seeking a dependable and hands-on Building Maintenance Associate to support the safe, clean, reliable, and efficient operation of our facilities and properties in the Washington, DC area.

This is an intermediate maintenance position that combines routine maintenance responsibilities with selected higher-level maintenance duties. The position is primarily focused on general building, facility, grounds, equipment, and preventive maintenance, while also requiring the ability to troubleshoot routine problems and independently complete moderately complex repairs.

The ideal candidate is practical, safety-conscious, dependable, comfortable working with tools and equipment, and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a maintenance team.

What You'll Do

Building & Facility Maintenance

• Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs throughout assigned facilities.
• Perform basic carpentry, painting, drywall, ceiling, door, lock, hardware, and fixture repairs.
• Replace light fixtures, lamps, filters, hardware, and other maintenance components as authorized.
• Perform minor plumbing repairs and fixture maintenance.
• Assist with HVAC and mechanical-system maintenance and report conditions requiring specialized or licensed service.
• Maintain work areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.

Preventive Maintenance & Repairs

• Complete scheduled preventive-maintenance tasks according to established procedures.
• Inspect equipment and building systems for signs of wear, damage, or unsafe conditions.
• Troubleshoot routine maintenance problems and determine appropriate corrective action.
• Perform moderately complex repairs within the employee's training, authorization, and skill level.
• Identify conditions requiring a licensed trade, contractor, or specialized technician and communicate those needs to the supervisor.

Grounds & Exterior Maintenance

• Maintain sidewalks, entrances, exterior areas, grounds, drainage features, and site furnishings.
• Remove debris and maintain safe and presentable property conditions.
• Operate grounds-maintenance equipment and other assigned equipment safely.
• Assist with seasonal maintenance, including snow and ice response when required.

Tools & Equipment

• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, maintenance equipment, grounds equipment, and other equipment appropriate to assigned duties.
• Perform routine inspection, cleaning, and basic maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Follow manufacturer instructions and established safety procedures.

Work Orders & Documentation

• Receive, prioritize, and complete assigned work orders.
• Document work performed, materials used, equipment conditions, and follow-up requirements.
• Use computerized maintenance-management systems, mobile devices, or other electronic systems as required.
• Communicate maintenance issues, delays, hazards, and completed work to supervisors and appropriate staff.

Customer Service & Teamwork

• Interact professionally with employees, residents, tenants, visitors, contractors, vendors, and the public.
• Assist contractors and skilled trades personnel with maintenance and repair projects.
• Respond appropriately to urgent facility and maintenance issues.
• Support other maintenance personnel and provide assistance to less-experienced employees when assigned.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Approximately two years of experience performing building, facilities, property, public works, commercial, institutional, or related maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Working knowledge of general maintenance practices.
• Ability to safely use common hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to perform routine troubleshooting and determine when an issue requires specialized assistance.
• Ability to read and follow work orders, maintenance instructions, equipment manuals, and basic diagrams.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and facility occupants.
• Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in commercial, institutional, municipal, government, or multi-building facilities.
• Experience with preventive-maintenance programs and computerized work-order systems.
• Basic experience with HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical systems, or building automation.
• Experience operating grounds or facility-maintenance equipment.
• Vocational, technical, trade-school, or apprenticeship training.
• OSHA or other workplace-safety training.
• Experience working in occupied facilities or public-facing environments.

Physical & Working Conditions

This position involves regular physical activity and may require:

• Standing and walking for extended periods.
• Bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, and working in confined or awkward positions.
• Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tools, equipment, supplies, and materials.
• Working from ladders or authorized elevated work platforms.
• Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Working around dust, noise, machinery, cleaning products, chemicals, and other maintenance-related hazards.
• Working occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, or emergency call-back assignments based on operational needs.

Safety & Compliance

This position is designated as safety-sensitive under applicable District of Columbia law. • The position is subject to the EDCJCC's applicable drug and alcohol testing policy, including testing applicable to safety-sensitive positions.
• Employees must be fit to safely perform their assigned duties and may not report to work or perform duties while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour

The posted range represents the employer's good-faith projected minimum and maximum hourly compensation for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation may depend on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, internal equity, and other lawful factors.
