Responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of all ship engineering systems. Provides leadership and technical expertise to engineering staff and upholds all vessel, company and required safety regulations with regards to vessel and equipment. Requirements Must hold an appropriate U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer license of an uninspected fishing vessel, 6600HP Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering Operations from an accredited Maritime Academy is preferred 3+ years of experience as a Chief Engineer onboard a fishing vessel preferred Work 12 hrs/day for 7 days/week in all weather conditions Self‑motivated team‑player Understand instructions and safety rules in English Must be able to provide 2 recent positive references from previous employers Capable of climbing and descending steep stairs and vertical ladders Share spaces with others including crew quarters, dining areas, and bathrooms Job Duties & Responsibilities Responsible for managing 12 hour watch and coordinating activity of the engineering staff engaged in operation of vessel systems, ensuring all scheduled routine rounds and readings are taken and verifying normal operations of all equipment. Technical and operational understanding of vessel power generation and distribution, including but not limited to: Switchboard management, shaft generators, auxiliary generators, load distribution and prioritizing, emergency power isolation. Technical and operation understanding of all vessel auxiliary systems and their controls, theory of operation as well as practical Operation, including but not limited to: Purifiers, OWS, pumps, Sanitation system, Refrigeration plants, hydraulic and pneumatic deck machinery, water makers, boilers, HVAC, and radar and navigational systems. Performing and logging scheduled leak checks on all refrigeration equipment. Startup & shut down of all propulsion related engines & equipment; both normal & Emergency procedures. System specific electrical knowledge for trouble shooting of control systems and power generation systems. Knowledge of common basic electrical control circuits, PLCs, analog sensors and IO structure. Effectively coordinates with all vessel department heads to ensure safe, efficient operation of the vessel both at sea and in port and conducts weekly safety inspections with leadership team. Conducts job observations and written performance reviews on assigned crewmembers to ensure standardized training requirements are met; provides recommendations and feedback on performance. Ensures compliance with all USCG manning, watch standing and operating regulations for the engine room. Maintains the vessel as per Class Society and regulatory requirements, ready for DNV and USCG inspections. Ensures compliance with applicable environmental regulations including but not limited to EPA, Ballast Water, Oil Transfer procedures and Pollution Prevention Program. Coordinates any system modifications, upgrades or replacements with Port Engineer. Manages preventive maintenance programs on all main systems engineering systems according to manufacturers recommended schedule unless altered by Port engineer. Inspects engines and other equipment and orders crew to repair or replace defective parts. Coordinates schedule of entire engineering staff and ensures adequate coverage year round. Rotations and schedules are clearly communicated to HR and Port Engineer, updated as changes occur. Repairs machinery using hand tools and power tools. Responsible for accuracy of various required engineering logs. (i.e. fuel, discharge, chlorine). Maintains accurate inventory of parts and places all orders for spares, replacements through appropriate procedures. Responsible for the safe handling of all petroleum products and gases used on board the vessel. Initiates or delegates the engineering response to unsafe or potentially hazardous work areas/conditions. Ensures minimum 6-12 hour overlap with rotating Chief, providing written turnover log to ensure clear and open communications. Ensures engineering spaces and tools are maintained in an organized and clean fashion in compliance with environmental regulations. Ensures compliance with applicable sections of the Safety Management System. Is knowledgeable and conversant on applicable policies and procedures contained in the SMS and thorough understanding and implementation of Vessel Lock out/Tags Plus procedures. Average crew share per trip is $16,800 - $19,800 depending on the value of the catch. Trip lengths can vary between 13-24 days on average depending on fishing conditions. Split a scheduled number of trips the vessel will fish each season based on quota with relief Chief Engineer. Also regularly scheduled for shipyard work rotation while the vessel is in port between the fishing seasons.
