The unit provides a wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities to the public while ensuring safety and high‑quality standards. Responsibilities include maintaining and improving visitor facilities, park infrastructure, and natural resources. Responsibilities Provide a safe and pleasant environment for recreational activities by cleaning, repairing, replacing, and operating equipment, systems, grounds, facilities, and infrastructure for park visitors and staff. Inspect and manage maintenance needs of park grounds, infrastructure, plumbing, roads, shorelines, campsites, group picnic areas, trails, vegetation, noxious weeds, wetlands, historic buildings, waste management, fleet vehicles, alternative vehicles, general equipment maintenance, weed/pest management, and compliance with OSHA, ADA, and other guidelines. Manage support activities, including hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising temporary maintenance personnel and volunteers; purchasing responsibilities, budgeting, contracting, working within fiscal guidelines; obtaining necessary certifications; submitting reports and communicating with park management, teams, fleet, outside agencies, partners, and the public. Maintain visitor services buildings, visitor center, entrance station, water treatment, utilities, purchasing janitorial supplies, and user‑level computer server and troubleshooting functions. Design work plans and complete field work to achieve maintenance goals for landscaping, weed/pest management, and facility infrastructure while ensuring safety. Assist in managing maintenance programs, operating the fleet vehicle program, ordering materials, submitting reports, resolving maintenance‑related problems, and maintaining maintenance records. Supervise temporary employees and volunteers, including interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, scheduling, and conflict resolution; take appropriate corrective or disciplinary action. Provide daily customer service and public relations with the park visitors and staff, maintaining a positive image of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, answering questions, providing information, and promoting park activities. Prepare records and reports concerning work plans, progress reports, employee paperwork, evaluations, purchasing, budget requests, fleet reporting, fuel usage reports, chemicals and application reports, bids from contractors and vendors, and working hours. Obtain and maintain required certifications, such as herbicide and pesticide applicators, and others required by the work unit. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Four (4) years of work experience in construction, farming, ranching, resource management, landscaping, facility management or a closely related field, electrical, plumbing, or carpentry. Substitutions A combination of related education in construction, project management, natural resources, environmental science, recreation management, environmental policy, engineering, professional engineering, or a related field will substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Preferred Qualifications Current or former State experience relevant to this position. Ability to work in a team or independently. Willing to add skills such as weed/noxious weed management, fencing, and road maintenance. Flexible when park needs change quickly. Responsive to urgent park matters such as an after‑hours broken water line. Capable of problem solving. Required Competencies Organizational and time‑management skills. Strong multi‑tasking and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently. Equipment maintenance skills. Grounds maintenance, fencing (or willingness to learn), building upkeep, and janitorial skills. Conditions of Employment State of Colorado residency required at the time of application. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license if operating a State vehicle. Driving background check required. Regular work hours may start before 5 AM or end after 10 PM; shifts of 12 + hours are not uncommon; emergency situations may extend shifts indefinitely. May handle pesticides and herbicides. Travel up to three nights a month when attending training. Will be required to maintain a safe driving record and comply with fleet driving requirements.
