Optometrist Opportunity in Chinle, Arizona

This opportunity is in Northern Arizona where Hopi and Navajo Nations meet. If you like the outdoors and are fascinated by Native culture, this assignment is for you. You will be working five minutes from Canyon de Chelly, one of the largest, and most significant archaeological preserves in the U.S. And if you are not fascinated by the 5,000-year habitation history of the park, you will be stunned by its red rock formations and wooded red-floored canyons. Meanwhile you will be within driving distance of five other National Parks including the Grand Canyon. You won't want to miss the Hubble Trading Post where Navajo and Hope traded wool blanket for pesh-tai, tokens they could use to buy other goods. It is essentially unchanged since 1883. More importantly you will be alleviating the health care shortage in one of the most underserved regions in the U.S. Navajo and Hope are 5-6 times more likely to suffer from debilitating chronic health conditions due to poor living conditions and lack of access to care.

This facility provides medical care for approximately 35,000 Navajo. Serving a rural area, many of their patients travel 100 miles round trip to receive care and do not have electricity or running water in their homes. In addition, most of their elderly patients speak only Navajo, and live according to traditional Navajo cultural practices. The CCHCF and Ambulatory Care Center is a 60-bed inpatient hospital and outpatient facility. Services offered are: Adult inpatient, Adult intensive care, Anesthesiology, Audiology, Dental, Emergency medicine, General surgery, Lab, Labor and delivery, Mental health, Native medicine, Nurse phone triage services, OB/GYN & Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Outpatient Primary Care, Pediatric Inpatient, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Podiatry, Public Health, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, School Health, Speech Pathology, Women's Health.

Optometrist - Responsibilities

• The Optometrist delivers primary and comprehensive eye care services, including prescribing corrective lenses and ordering diagnostic studies.
• Diagnose and manage visual and ocular conditions, including Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, Iritis, and other ocular/systemic diseases.
• Perform minor surgical procedures (e.g., anterior segment foreign body removal, corneal debridement, suture removal).
• Provide preventive and therapeutic optometric care to patients across all age groups and with diverse needs.
• The Optometrist detects neuromuscular impairments and anomalies of binocular function.
• Refer and coordinate medical and surgical care with other healthcare professionals as needed.
• Utilize laboratory and radiology services to manage and evaluate ophthalmic conditions.
• Conduct mandated examinations, such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma screenings.
• The Optometrist provides specialty clinics and services, including low vision care, contact lens services, and geriatric care.

Optometrist - Requirements

• Hold a degree from an accredited Optometry Program in the United States.
• At least one year of professional experience as an Optometrist
• Must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Must have a current unrestricted license to practice Optometry in a U.S. State, D.C., Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
