What you will be doing?
The Financial Counselor serves as an on-site liaison between clients, clinical teams, and the revenue cycle, ensuring clear communication and accountability around financial responsibility throughout the client’s episode of care. This role is responsible for conducting financial discussions at admission and throughout treatment, securing required financial documentation, and supporting utilization review and discharge planning through close interdepartmental collaboration.
What tasks are required?
Meet with clients at admission to review insurance benefits, patient financial responsibility, payment expectations, and available payment options.
Facilitate and document payment arrangements and payment plans, ensuring all required financial consents and forms are completed and signed.
Provide ongoing financial counseling throughout the client’s stay, including follow-up discussions related to balances, changes in coverage, or length-of-stay determinations.
Communicate the utilization review process to clients in coordination with clinical and utilization review teams, helping set appropriate expectations regarding coverage and authorization decisions.
Collaborate closely with Clinical, Case Management, Admissions, and Business Office teams to support coordinated care, financial transparency, and effective discharge planning.
Participate in discharge planning discussions to ensure financial matters are addressed prior to discharge and reduce post-discharge A/R risk.
Maintain accurate documentation of all client financial interactions in the electronic health record or designated systems.
Escalate financial concerns, coverage issues, or non-compliance with payment arrangements to leadership as appropriate.
What we need from you?
2 Years prior experience in financial counseling, patient access, revenue cycle, or healthcare financial services preferred.
Experience in behavioral health, substance use disorder, or healthcare settings strongly preferred.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to discuss sensitive financial matters with empathy and professionalism.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments.
High level of organization, attention to detail, and accountability.
Working knowledge of insurance benefits, patient responsibility, and payment plan structures.
