District Police Officer

Huffman ISD

Huffman ISD Police Officer

Provides police support such as patrolling district property to protect all students, personnel, and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss due to theft or vandalism. Enforces all laws including municipal ordinances, county ordinances, and State laws. Responds to 911 emergency and non-emergency situations.

Minimum Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or GED College coursework in criminal justice, police management or equivalent from an accredited college or university recognized by the US Department of Education or advanced training from another police agency preferred Valid Texas Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission of Law Enforcement Officers (TCOLE) - Basic Proficiency Certification Consideration given to a TCOLE license or license from another state with a General Discharge, Honorable Discharge, or the equivalent notation from previous law enforcement agency.

Must have a valid Texas Driver's License with acceptable driving record.

Must be eligible to be bonded as required by Texas Education Code Section 37.08 (h) Must not have a criminal history record Must successfully pass a pre-employment battery of testing that includes Texas Peace Officer background check, firearms qualification, and psychological, physical, polygraph, and drug examinations Must possess adequate visual acuity and hearing ability sufficient to read, write, hear, and speak clearly in person and over communications Must be able to workday, evening, and night shifts with varied days off This police position is classified as essential emergency personnel and, as such, may be required to without days off, and for extended time periods, prior to, during and after emergency situations/all hazards.

Knowledge of police terminology and related standard office procedures and practices Knowledge of all Texas traffic and highway driving rules and regulations General knowledge of criminal investigation, police report writing and criminal law Skill in and trained on subduing offenders including use of firearms and handcuffs as it relates to students, employees, citizens, and other patrons in school setting situations Skill in operating a police motor vehicle to include operating radio communications Skill in working with youth and adults Skill in the use of keyboarding with typing at a minimum 30 wpm Skill in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation (written and verbal) and proofreading Ability to control sudden violent or extreme physical acts of others and exhibit rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously Ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate multiple projects and/or activities Ability to maintain and secure confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information

Ability to maintain professional behavior, appearance, and work ethic to represent the school district in a positive manner at all times Ability to communicate effectively with tact and diplomacy and provide a high level of customer service to employees, administrators, District officials, parents, co-workers, and outside agencies Possess the skills, experience, and a genuine interest in working in an educational environment meeting the needs of students, parents, staff, and faculty Possess a genuine desire, ability, and sensitivity to work with children, adolescents, and enforce the laws of the United States and the State of Texas where applicable

Ten plus years of successful law enforcement experience as a Commissioned Peace Officer preferred Master Peace Officer Certification preferred

Commit to, honor, and enforce applicable Board policy, mission, and vision of the district and Police Department. Investigate assigned criminal complaints. Assist in the protection of students, staff, and District property. Serve as a law enforcement resource to students and District personnel. Provide a general and consistent adult and law enforcement presence at critical locations on District facilities. Provide a roving patrol of District assets when not assigned to a specific task. Respond to calls for service during and after regular school hours. Respond to civil disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, fire, etc. (where District personnel are required). Inform the Chief of Police of all conditions that affect the safety and security of students, staff, and District property. Patrol assigned campuses and respond to all calls from local school principals or designees regarding crisis situations, accidents, and reports of crimes within district jurisdiction. Assist staff with after-hour functions upon request. Enforce all laws of both felony and misdemeanor degree of Federal, State, and local origin. Investigate motor vehicle traffic accidents or criminal offenses and stop and identify suspicious persons and/or vehicles. Assist the Transportation Department with problem bus stop areas and/or chronic disruptions on school buses upon request. Fulfill telecommunication duties when necessary. Write effective legal incident reports, collect evidence as necessary for supporting criminal investigations and apprehend offenders. Collect and preserve evidence for criminal investigations including witness statements and physical evidence. Arrest perpetrators, file appropriate charges, and ensure proper and safe placement in police vehicle or holding area. Help provide traffic control at athletic events, school functions, school crossings or openings or at any other time as assigned. Provide protection to or escort district personnel as needed. Operate vehicle, if assigned, and all equipment including firearms according to established safety procedures. Testify in court as needed. Prepare correspondence, forms, reports, manuals, and presentations for the department head and other department staff members. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required including but not limited to affidavits for arrest, incident reports, and activity reports. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with coworkers, supervisor, District officials and employees, public, and outside agencies, and organizations. Provide outstanding customer service. Maintain good judgment and decision making when dealing with supervisor, co-workers, District officials and employees, public, and outside agencies, and organizations. Work cooperatively with other police agencies to share information and provide other assistance. Maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information when received and distributed to appropriate designees as directed by the Chief of Police or designee. Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovations related to position. Maintain an organized work environment. Performs other duties as directed by the Chief of Police or designee in charge.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Pay and Incentives Pay scale commensurate with experience Incentive pay available

District vehicle, firearms, handcuffs, security equipment, two-way radio, first aid equipment, alarm system and other security equipment, fire extinguisher, and standard office equipment including computer, printer, copier, telephone, scanner, and fax machine.

Maintain emotional control under stress May be subject to adverse and hazardous working conditions including violent and armed confrontations Work with frequent interruptions Work outside and inside in varying climate conditions, on uneven or slippery walking surfaces, on ladders and lifts, around equipment with moving parts Frequent sitting with strenuous walking, standing, running, climbing, reaching, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting 10 to 50 pounds frequently, 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, more than 100 pounds infrequently

Occasional prolonged and irregular work hours – flexibility with schedule preferred Prolonged use of equipment and computer with repetitive hand motions if in the office or on drive assignment Prolonged and irregular work hours – flexibility with schedule required to include working different shift and/or days of the week Emergency call-out at a moment's notice Remain on duty until properly relieved Work overtime during staffing shortages and emergencies, up to and including double shifts when required Travel in all different remote sites in the district at odd hours if on drive assignment Daily attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job.
