CIVILIAN DISPATCHER

Job Title

Under general supervision; operates a variety of communication equipment in the dissemination of information to law enforcement/emergency medical personnel; performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

• Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
• Operates communication equipment (PBX system, radio and telephone console) to receive and dispatch emergency information and/or emergency medical personnel.
• Types various forms and reports.
• Maintains log of telephone and radio calls received/transmitted.
• Maintain knowledge of standard sheriff's office practices and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Supervision is received from Director of the Consolidated Communications Center, or other designated supervisor.
• No functional and administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum six (6) months related experience preferred.
• Must be able to type 30 wpm with accuracy and proficiency. Employee is regularly required to sit and use hands and fingers to type.
• Ability to acquire and maintain certification on the NCIC/CJIS criminal history information system is a condition of continued employment. Failure to obtain certification within six (6) months of hire date and successfully re-certify every two (2) years shall be grounds for termination.
• Must complete Control Terminal Agency Training mandated by the National Crime Information Center within six (6) months after date of employment within the Consolidated Communications Center.
• Must complete Iowa system certification for full access use within six (6) months after date of employment within the Consolidated Communications Center.
• Must be willing to comply with the Consolidated Communications Center residency policy: Upon acceptance of formal job offer, new employee shall have up to 6 months to live within a 30-minute response time from the Black Hawk Consolidated Communications Center located at 225 E 6th St Waterloo, IA 50703.
• Ability to pass a background investigation as required by Iowa Code section 661-8.104(3) prior to employment.
• Knowledge and previous experience operating a CRT and teletype system preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to speak in a clear, concise and distinct voice are required.
• Ability to think and respond promptly during tense and stressful situations.
• Ability to record information in a given sequence.
• Ability to read and write English accurately.
• Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality regarding all aspects of the job.
• Must have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and management.
• Ability to deal effectively with associates and the general public.
• Must be proficient in computer software applications.
