About Indiana State Prison: Indiana State Prison is a level-four maximum-security facility located in Michigan City, Indiana, with a capacity of more than 2,400 incarcerated adult males. As the oldest correctional facility in the state, it has a long history and operates on a secured 24-acre campus with ten manned towers. The prison grounds also include a level-two facility with a capacity of 385 incarcerated adult males. Staff maintain a clean, orderly environment while prioritizing safety and security. Programs available to incarcerated individuals support personal development and re-entry preparation where applicable. The facility provides a structured setting for individuals with long sentences or those convicted of violent offenses.

Role Overview

As a Maintenance Technician, you'll join a full-service maintenance team at the Indiana State Prison, supporting daily repair and preventive maintenance in plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and grounds. This Monday–Friday role offers steady hours, strong safety practices, and hands-on experience. We provide training for motivated individuals starting their maintenance career, with a clear path for advancement into supervisory and leadership roles (Maintenance Technician → Maintenance Supervisor → Physical Plant Director). Salary Statement: The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience. Depending on the retirement plan you choose, the total compensation value of a $42,900.00 salary, including the State's retirement contributions, can reach approximately $69,822.98. This highlights the full value of your benefits package, beyond your take-home pay.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Oversee and participate in preventive maintenance and repairs of facilities
• Maintain accountability of materials, tools, equipment, and vehicles
• Ensure compliance, of self and assigned personnel, with all appropriate protective and safety requirements
• Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development
• Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees
• Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures
• Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position

What You'll Need for Success

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

• Knowledge of electrical systems, carpentry, plumbing and painting trades
• Ability to plan, schedule and supervise job sites
• Ability to fill in for other foreman to ensure the operation of the department
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints and other remediation plans and documents
• Thorough knowledge of standard practices, processes, materials, procedures, and the ability to use tools and equipment of the various trades, such as carpentry, plumbing and electrical
• Thorough knowledge of the OSHA standards, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), occupational hazards and safety precautions required of the various trade areas
• Ability to plan and estimate project proposals in terms of equipment, man hours and costs
• Ability to endure exposure to inclement weather
• Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow
• Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets

This role must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment:

• Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License
• A degree is not required
• Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group. This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.
