Job Title Safety Intern Employer Dawson Business Service Line PAC – Construction/Operations & Maintenance Reports To Site Safety Health Officer (SSHO) Effective Date 1/2/2025 – The internship will run for the semester’s duration with the option of extending if DAWSON and the student agree it would be beneficial for both parties concerned. Salary Range $18-$20 per hour Summary We are seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Safety Intern to join our team. As an intern, you will be a part of promoting and maintaining a safe environment on construction sites and Operations & Maintenance sites in Hawaii. You will have the opportunity to have a hands‑on experience working alongside our experienced Safety personnel, Superintendents, Quality Control and Project Managers and contribute to the successful completion of projects while prioritizing the well‑being of all personnel. Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for identifying hazardous workplace conditions. Being involved in daily jobsite inspections to identify hazards, unsafe conditions and non‑compliance with safety regulations. Reporting and record keeping of daily audits. Assisting in accident, incident or near miss investigations to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Takes samples and measurements of hazardous materials, and coordinates the removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards. Participates and develops the training of employees on safety policies, procedures, regulations. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state health and safety regulations and ensures necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines. Study EM 385-1-1 and OSHA 1910/1926 to get a good understanding of the laws required to do the job in an efficient manner. Participates in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures. Participate in emergency response procedures and drills to ensure readiness for potential emergencies or accidents on the construction site. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications No prior experience or training. Currently pursuing a degree in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field. Strong academic performance in relevant coursework, including Safety Management, Ergonomics or Industrial Hygiene. Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and adapt to changing project requirements. Associate's Degree (AA) in progress. Certificates, licenses and registrations required: None. Physical Demands and Work Environment Occasionally required to stand. Occasionally required to walk. Occasionally required to sit. Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity. Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl. Continually required to talk or hear. Occasionally work in high, precarious places. Occasionally work around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals. Frequently exposure to outside weather conditions. Occasionally exposure to extreme heat or cold (non‑weather). Occasionally exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 35 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds, or continually lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: Depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Additional remarks regarding work environment: mostly outside and observing work in progress.
