Site Medical Director - CHS

This position is within NYC Health + Hospitals’ Correctional Health Services, a leading system providing comprehensive health care to incarcerated individuals. Purpose of Position Under general supervision and with considerable latitude, the Site Medical Director oversees medical care within a New York City jail facility, focusing on women’s health, transgender health, and reproductive health services. Examples of Typical Tasks Manage, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate operations of jail-based health care, including professional, clinical, and support services. Oversee daily laboratory and radiology reviews, medication renewals, and referral reviews; plan and supervise comprehensive medical services. Serve as a clinical educator for frontline staff on evidence-based practice, workflow, policy application, and quality improvement. Provide direct clinical care and understand workflows and policy changes in the security setting. Coordinate closely with specialists at RMSC, including psychiatric, infectious disease, reproductive, obstetrical, transgender, and infirmary services. Support safe care transition programs for patients returning to the community. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and recommend policy and workflow changes. Act as liaison between CHS and NYC Department of Correction on clinical issues. Maintain current knowledge of evidence-based community standards. Coordinate care with outside hospitals and specialty services. Develop operating plans, programs, and procedures to implement system-wide goals. Create facility policies and procedures, translating administrative directives into operational programs. Provide recommendations on proposed projects and programs to department heads. Assist in budgeting and fund allocation based on cost studies and reviews. Resolve staffing, facility, equipment, and supply issues. Serve as liaison with departments to provide professional, technical, administrative, and support services. Represent the facility in building cooperative relationships with community and governmental agencies. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from a medical school approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association. Completion of an acceptable internship in an approved hospital. A license to practice medicine in the State of New York. Certification by the American Board in the field of specialization or a faculty appointment of Associate Professor or higher in a medical school recognized by the American Medical Association. Eight (8) years of satisfactory full-time paid experience in the field of specialization, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or administrative capacity. Department Preferences Medical degree and Board Certification in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or equivalent, with at least three years of clinical experience and supervisory experience preferred. Unrestricted license to practice medicine in New York, current DEA, BCLS or ACLS certification, and Infection Control Certification. Equivalent combination of training, education, and experience in related fields. Thorough knowledge of healthcare delivery fundamentals, organization, administration, regulations, and hospital operations. Knowledge and experience in patient-centered primary care. Interest or formal training in women’s health, correctional health, health inequities, or related fields (e.g., reproductive health, transgender health, infectious disease, health disparities). Training in trauma-informed care and interdisciplinary care experience. Collaborative approach to care provision and a drive to advocate for incarcerated individuals.
