Position Summary The School of Medicine at Stanford University seeks a board-eligible or board-certified veterinarian to join the School of Medicine in the Department of Ophthalmology as Associate Professor or Professor in the Clinician Educator line. Candidates should have completed a residency in laboratory animal medicine with over seven years of experience in laboratory medicine of non-human primates and a minimum of five years’ experience in the management of neurosurgical implants in NHPs. The major criterion for appointment as Clinician Educators is excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, teaching, administrative and scholarship appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill. The academic rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The successful applicant will have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree, and seven years of relevant experience with NHPs. Candidates should have advanced knowledge of the veterinary sciences to provide and ensure quality care for research animals under experimental procedures or requiring medical care. Key Functions Provide veterinary oversight of the lab’s animals, including husbandry, leading an enrichment and behavioral training program, and research management. Provide veterinary guidance and care where/when needed for a range of large and small animal species and work collaboratively with Stanford’s Animal Care Unit. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, institutional protocols, and voluntary animal welfare laws and regulations, help to develop standard operating procedures for veterinary care and study implementation, help research staff design and implement in vivo studies, train and oversee lab members on animal training, veterinary care, surgical procedures, lab SOPs, and animal use laws and regulations. Base Pay Range Clinical Associate Professor: $273,000 - $303,000 Clinical Professor: $338,000-$362,000 Compensation and Benefits This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs. Responsibilities Perform veterinary care physical exams, diagnostic work‑ups, medical or surgical treatment, and/or euthanasia, for all species found in the research colony populations. Ensure accuracy of clinical records in compliance with state and federal regulations. Provide expert care in the areas of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of research animals. Participate in clinical and didactic training of residents, interns, and visiting veterinary students. Provide assessments of animals prior to intrastate, interstate, and international shipments, including physical examination, review of colony history, and pertinent diagnostic tests. Coordinate clinical service on‑call schedule; organize and implement weekly clinical rounds, including rotational schedule for veterinary emergency duty. Review animal use proposals for the Administrative Panel on Laboratory Animal Care, and coordinate the monitoring of approved research projects. Provide clinical supervision and training for Animal Care Assistants, Veterinary and husbandry Technicians, or lower‑level Veterinarians as appropriate. Manage direct reports in the laboratory and oversee all vivarium operations. Serve as a liaison between the lab and the Veterinary Service Center (VSC) to facilitate research activities and ensure animal welfare. Ensure proper anesthesia and pain management for all procedures and postoperative care. Complete pre‑op exams, post‑op care, and administer controlled substances. Manage surgical sterile preparation, surgical inventory and OR operations. Provide medical and behavioral health monitoring of the lab’s animals and oversight of housing. Provide on‑call services as assigned. Administer clinical treatments as directed. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, institutional protocols, and voluntary animal welfare laws and regulations. Maintain accurate documentation and medical records in accordance with lab requirements, institutional requirements, and regulatory bodies. Develop and review SOPs to reflect current and best practices and verify training in lab staff. Develop and manage the lab’s animal training program to achieve voluntary data collection using positive reinforcement. Develop, manage and help implement the lab’s enrichment program. Develop and manage IACUC protocols with the PI. Manage the laboratory control substance protocol, manage all aspects of implementation of institutional Environmental Health and Safety requirements. Assist in the design and implementation of in vivo studies. Complete reports as required for research studies. May perform tasks associated with other teams including, but not limited to, animal care or surgery under supervision of someone trained in those areas. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in animal behavior and training, veterinary medical care, and surgical techniques for large and small animals. Effective oral and written communication of veterinary and scientific information to technical, research, and clinical staff. Detailed knowledge of animal welfare regulations and best practices. Basic computer skills. Certifications & Licenses Board eligible or Board certified in a pertinent veterinary specialty. Veterinarian license from at least one state. Physical Requirements Frequently stand/walk, use a computer, and write by hand. Occasionally sitting, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, twist/bend/stoop/squat, use a telephone, and restrain large animals. Rarely climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), kneel/crawl, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds. The ability to lift, push and pull 50lbs. Requires strong aerobic fitness. Ability to work in a dusty, dirty and odorous environment. Must be free of animal related allergies. Working Conditions Occasional extended work hours, including weekends and holidays. On‑call availability nights and weekends. Variable hours depending on the current needs of the unit. Lunch hours may vary and will be established per the needs of the unit. Work schedule is subject to change with prior notification. Restricted time off or vacation during peak business cycles. Work occurs in a secured facility, in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research. May require working with or being in areas where hazardous materials, animal allergens and/or infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards include, but are not limited to: zoonosis, chemicals, pesticides, and solvents. Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing, and gloves; may require use of a respirator.
