Food Service Helper

The Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Gregory Mott, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of Food Service Helper with the Poughkeepsie City School District. This entry-level position involves assistance in the preparation and service of food and the cleaning of kitchen equipment. Workers in this class may be required to perform cooking duties involving lesser degrees of skill than regularly required in the classifications of Cook and Assistant Cook. Supervision is normally not a function of this class.

Typical work activities include assisting cooks in phases of preparation involving lesser degrees of skill than those of Cook or Assistant Cooks; assisting in the preparation of salads and desserts; cleaning, washing, and otherwise preparing vegetables and fruits for cooking; washing dishes, pots, and pans by hand or machine; sweeping, mopping, and cleaning kitchen or dining areas; cleaning work areas and equipment such as counters, trays, tray carts, hot food tables, coffee urns, toasters, etc.; handling food and equipment in accordance with sanitary practices; filling sugar bowls and salt and pepper shakers; attending in-service training sessions; acting as a monitor during breakfast program, escorting students to and from cafeteria, and maintaining order in dining area; polishing silverware and cleaning closets containing dishes or linens; placing food on trays according to menu and diet requirements and substitutions as required; delivering trays and making nourishments according to directions of recipe and diet; serving late or "hold" trays; assembling items for bag lunches; setting tables and clearing them after meals; acting as cashier; and doing related work as required.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics include the ability to acquire knowledge of large-scale preparation, cooking and serving of food and the care of tableware, glassware, and kitchen appliances; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; cleanliness and neatness; ability to relate well to others; courtesy; tact; and physical condition commensurate with demands of the position.

Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials, and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate. Salary is in accordance with the CSEA contract, $21.00/hour, not to exceed 6 hours per day. Final date for filing is continuous recruitment.
