About Our Atascocita Location (Harris County):
Alpharus Health’s largest facility, Atascocita is a residential correctional center focused solely on substance use treatment for court-ordered clients. With 12 buildings and nearly 500 clients, the facility provides a structured, secure environment without armed guards. Staff work collaboratively in a team of 170, including counselors, probation officers, and support staff. The location is undergoing major renovations to become a state-of-the-art treatment center. Nursing Supervisor - Job Summary
Assists Nursing Manager with supervision of staff engaged in delivering nursing services, such as conducting comprehensive assessments, taking vitals, interviewing prospective clients, completing client admission forms, medical history, and other duties assigned by Nursing Manger. Coordinates nursing processes and audits medical records for accuracy. Reviews medical policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance. Acts as liaison with physicians, psychiatrists and other medical professionals to ensure appropriate care. Responsible for the management of medical emergencies on campus and the supervision of the nursing staff outside of normal work hours.
Nursing Supervisor - Essential Responsibilities
- Interviews, hires, and oversees the training and development of staff. Schedules, assigns work to, evaluates the performance of and, when necessary, applies appropriate discipline to staff. Ensures compliance with established personnel policies and achievement of objectives for professional growth and development of staff. Assists Nurse Manger in reviewing staff attendace, PTO, and time approval to develop shift schedules for nursing staff to ensure effective coverage for the facility.
- Documents and charts client assessment data, medical needs scheduled appointments, treatment plan, and so forth; transcribes physician orders. Audits medical charts to review comprehensive assessments to ensure accuracy of diagnosis and appropriateness of care. Audits medical records to ensure contractual and regulatory compliance. Identifies and resolves discrepancies.
- Assists medical consultants by setting up room and supplies for scheduled procedure, explaining procedure to clients and eliciting their cooperation, passing instruments and supplies, accepting and labeling specimens. Also reports client observations, evaluations of medical problems and potential barriers to achieving functional state of health to support recovery.
- Serves as professional resource to nursing staff in evaluating unusually complex cases and devising appropriate treatment responses. Responsible for resolving management problems such interdepartmental barriers to delivery of care utilizing appropriate resources.
- Assists Nurse Manger in the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to medical services. Interprets and enforces Gateway’s overall objectives, as well as funding agencies policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
- Assists in conducting initial health screenings and assessment of clients’ condition, and contributes information to aid in planning and evaluating care to meet identified medical needs.
- Determines developmentally appropriate referral sources for clients requiring further medical, dental, or psychiatric diagnoses or treatment; schedules appointments; coordinates client transportation to scheduled appointments; conducts follow-up to ensure successful implementation of care plan and completion of necessary exams, tests and treatments; evaluates client response to treatments; instructs clients in self-care; and completes discharge plan summaries.
- Performs triage of clients presenting symptoms, and performs both complex and routine treatments as prescribed by physician or as warranted by assessed condition, in accordance with established protocols. Refers more complex injuries or illnesses to appropriate health care professionals.
- Administers or supervises client self-administration of medications as prescribed by physician. Monitors clients for reactions, side effects, or contraindications; and confers as necessary with physician or pharmacist on withholding or continuing medications. Contacts pharmacy to order prescribed medications. Dispenses nonprescription medications as necessary and appropriate.
- Conducts educational classes and seminars for clients and staff concerning health, treatment of medical issues related to substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, infection control, and so forth. Completes required documentation on class participation, progress and attendance.
- Conducts annual tuberculosis testing, and maintains related records in compliance with all applicable governmental laws and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager, including management of medical emergencies on campus and the supervision of the nursing staff outside of normal work hours.
Minimum Education & Experience
- Associates in Nursing, preferrably Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
- Current State license as a Registered Nurse
- Two (2) years of progressively responsible nursing experience, with at least one (1) year experience in psychiatric and/or substance abuse field. Experience with managing a clinic preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the principles of physical growth and development and psychosocial development to assess and interpret client data and identify individual needs and provide health-related care appropriate to the developmental stage and client population
- Strong organizational skills to manage client health care activities; time management skills to work independently in developing and implementing appropriate responses to identified medical needs
- Strong analytical skills to resolve frequently complex issues, coordinate compliance and successfully implement change
- Strong communication skills to obtain assessment information, instruct clients and elicit their cooperation in managing their care, conduct educational classes, and maintain effective working relationships and contacts with other employees and health care professionals
Physical Requirements
- Normal or corrected vision and some color vision, necessary to read thermometers, blood pressure gauges, dipstick analysis results, and so forth; and to see and evaluate presented symptoms and injuries (critical)
- Communication abilities necessary to gather and exchange information with clients and staff in person or by telephone, provide care instructions, and schedule appointments (critical)
- Proofreading and checking documents for accuracy, and reading reports, on a regular basis (critical)
- Ability to respond to telephone, pages and intercoms (critical)
- Manual dexterity necessary to manipulate instruments and syringes, apply bandages or sterile wipes, and accept and pass instruments and specimens; and touch sensitivity necessary to detect pulse, palpate body areas, and perform treatments with minimal client discomfort (critical)
- Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data on a regular basis (essential)
- Ability to stoop and bend, ability to reach and grab with arms and hands, and ability to walk and move about for up to two hours at a time (desirable).
- Ability to walk and move about the facilities for up to two hours at a time, to monitor and interact with clients
- Ability to record, proofread and check documents and files for accuracy
- Ability to use a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data
Work Environment
- Regular exposure to needles, noxious fumes or odors, blood and other specimens, and communicable diseases. Potential for injury or harm is limited if established safety and infection control precautions are followed.
- Works in a correctional facility where there is exposure to potentially disruptive and violent inmates. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions, however might experience relatively few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.
Compensation:
- $85,000 - $90,000 per year
- Alpharus Health conducts annual performance reviews, with merit increase eligibility determined by employee performance and organizational financial performance.
