AMPATH Kenya Adolescent Health In-Country Lead

DescriptionThe Arnhold Institute for Global Health at Mount Sinai and the Department of Global Health and Health System Design is seeking a motivated and dedicated physician with a focus on adolescent health to serve as Mount Sinai’s in-country lead for AMPATH Kenya’s adolescent health programs. Based in western Kenya, the AMPATH Kenya Adolescent Health In-Country Lead will help lead efforts to strengthen youth-friendly health services, expand adolescent health capacity within AMPATH Kenya, and support Mount Sinai’s care, education, and research programs in Kenya. Reporting to Mount Sinai’s AMPATH Kenya Faculty Lead, the AMPATH Kenya Adolescent Health In-Country Lead will be based in Eldoret, Kenya. They will work with our partners at Moi University, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), the Kenya Ministry of Health, the AMPATH Consortium, and other relevant stakeholders to build clinical capacity for adolescent friendly care programs and deliver youth friendly clinical care, supervise Mount Sinai trainees rotating in Kenya, and engage in relevant research efforts to improve youth health. They will receive visiting faculty appointments from Moi University and/or Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and will work within their appointed departments to advance our shared priorities for care, education, and research. The ideal candidate will have a proven clinical academic background in adolescent and global health, with a demonstrated commitment to teaching, health systems strengthening, and advancing health equity. Highly competitive candidates will commit to a minimum two-year term of service in Kenya. However, on a case-by-case basis, well-qualified candidates will be considered for shorter-term commitments, i.e. less than two years.The selected candidate will be appointed as faculty in the Department of Global Health and Health System Design. Candidates with multiple clinical and/or academic specialties will also be considered for joint primary or secondary faculty appointment in relevant clinical and/or academic departments at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, e.g. a physician with both Family Medicine and Pediatrics specialties would be considered for joint primary or secondary appointments in the Departments of Global Health, Internal Medicine, and/or Pediatrics. Faculty rank will be commensurate with the individual’s qualifications and the duration of their commitment.ResponsibilitiesProgram Administration & Partnership Engagement (10% FTE*)Participate in relevant AMPATH Kenya leadership meetings as the in-country lead for adolescent health. These include, but are not limited to, the monthly AMPATH consortium meetings, weekly AMPATH Kenya executive committee meetings, and regular AMPATH Kenya and AMPATH Global education meetings.Liaise with AMPATH Consortium stakeholders in Adolescent Health.Participate in regular Mount Sinai AMPATH Kenya Partnership meetings.Collaborate closely with the Mount Sinai Global Youth Health team and regularly attend meetings as needed to advance adolescent health programs in Kenya.Represent Mount Sinai and AMPATH Kenya in adolescent health forums, conferences, professional societies, and working groups to advocate for adolescent health issues.Cultivate and maintain partnerships with Kenyan and international organizations, NGOs, governments, and local communities to leverage resources and enhance program impact.In collaboration with Mount Sinai’s AMPATH Kenya Partnership Faculty Lead, Arnhold Institute leadership, Kenyan counterparts, and program staff, develop strategic program priorities and annual plans for Mount Sinai-led programs in AMPATH Kenya, aid in building program resources, capacity, and funding, and lead the in-country implementation of program and partnership development strategiesProvide regular progress reportsAdolescent Health Capacity Building and Training (20% FTE)Participate in the AMPATH Kenya Adolescent Health Working Group and aid with recruitment, speaker engagement, and occasional in-person sessions.Assist in the development and implementation of care guidelines for adolescents at the Rafiki Centre of Excellence in Adolescent Health and other MTRH departments and AMPATH Kenya programs. Support Kenya Partnership strategic planning activities, meetings, and events related to adolescent health.Once fellowship program is in place, provide supervision for fellows.Develop, implement and evaluate training programs for multidisciplinary healthcare providers, including in-person brief intensive trainings and remote teleconference trainings Build capacity among local healthcare systems to sustain and scale adolescent health interventions.Support and collaborate on the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs aimed at improving adolescent health outcomes in Kenya; ensure programs are evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and aligned with local health priorities.Facilitate the implementation of research projects related to Adolescent Health through AMPATH Kenya, including building relationships between researchers from North American and European AMPATH institutions and researchers from MTRH and Moi University College of Health Sciences.Clinical Service in Kenya (15% FTE)Supervise clinical officers, nurses, pediatric registrars, and fellows in the MTRH Rafiki Centre for Excellence in Adolescent Health; provide consultation to providers at other AMPATH sites.Support MTRH faculty in pediatrics and adolescent health, in the development of an adolescent health consultation services at MTRH, Shoe for Africa Children’s Hospital, and Riley Mother-Baby Hospital.Potential option to rotate as an attending on in-patient or other clinical services in primary specialty, e.g., pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine, etc., at MTRH or AMPATH clinics.Teaching (20% FTE)Serve as visiting lecturer at Moi University School of Medicine and/or Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in host clinical or academic department(s), e.g. Pediatrics, Family Medicine, etc. Build and maintain an adolescent health curriculum for registrars; participate in teaching Moi pediatric and medicine registrars in adolescent health.Collaborate on the development and management of an adolescent global health trainee (student, resident, fellow) elective at Mount Sinai, including curriculum development and supervision of trainees while they are in Eldoret.Supervise and mentor Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai fellows, residents, and medical students on global health electives in Kenya.Coordinate orientation and scheduling of visiting Mount Sinai faculty and trainees.Along with the other AMPATH Kenya In-Country Leads, participate in giving global health lectures and fireside chats on Adolescent Health topics for North American, European, and Kenyan trainees.Participate in the call rotation alongside other AMPATH Kenya In-Country Leads, responding to trainee and other visitor issues that arise at the IU House compound (the guest house that hosts AMPATH Kenya faculty and visitors).Research & Scholarly Work (10% FTE)Develop a targeted area of scholarship (research, education, clinical, QI) in adolescent health.Collaborate/consult with MTRH, Moi University, and AMPATH faculty on adolescent-focused research, quality improvement, and program development projects.Scholarly productivity: Apply for an internal grant in year 1 and an external grant in year 2; Author minimum of one manuscript per year. Clinical Service in New York (25% FTE)The AMPATH Kenya Adolescent Health In-Country Lead will support up to 25% of their full time effort through clinical service within the Mount Sinai Health System or one if its clinical partners in New York City. Clinical service assignments will be aligned with candidate clinical specialties and organized in consultation with relevant clinical department or division leaders to determine specific assignments and clinical schedulesClinical service at Mount Sinai will be at the discretion of the relevant clinical department(s), e.g. Department of Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, etc., and is contingent on meeting all licensure, credentialling, and requirements for clinical employment Adolescent Medicine fellowship-trained candidates will be prioritized for clinical service within the Division of Adolescent Health at Mount Sinai, potentially providing outpatient coverage at the Adolescent Health Center, supervising residents and medical students and providing inpatient consultation at Kravitz Children’s Hospital. Clinical service at Mount Sinai will be at the discretion of the relevant clinical department and/or division leaders and coordinated through the Department of Global Health and Health System Design.Appropriate alternative clinical opportunities within the Mount Sinai Health System or our NYC Health + Hospitals partner, Elmhurst Hospital, will be identified for candidates from other specialty backgrounds. General Skills & CompetenciesHighly competitive candidates will have:Relevant experience in global health program implementation, clinical care delivery, health systems strengthening, health worker development, community-based health, health research, or other global health programs in resource limited settings. A demonstrated track record of working in diverse global health settings.Excellent management and communications skills, strong interpersonal skills, cross-cultural understanding, diplomacy and outreach skills to establish and maintain positive working relationships with host partners, donors, and other stakeholdersPrevious experience living and working on donor-funded health and development initiatives in Africa strongly preferred. Strong language skills preferred (priority for English and Kiswahili ability) Ability to live and work in KenyaQualificationsMedical degree (MD or equivalent), residency in pediatrics, family medicine, internal medicine, and/or a relevant clinical specialty Fellowship training in Adolescent Medicine strongly preferredAdvanced degree (MPH, MSc) in public health or related field strongly preferredDemonstrated experience and understanding of health system and care delivery structures, academic medicine and research, program development, monitoring and evaluation, and systems strengthening and improvement is highly desiredDemonstrated experience teaching and training multidisciplinary learnersSalary & BenefitsCompensation range from 140K to 180K (not including bonuses / incentive compensation or benefits)Salary Disclosure Information: Mount Sinai Health System provides a salary range to comply with the New York City law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements.
