Director of Risk Management

About Kaweah Health Kaweah Health is a publicly owned, community healthcare organization that provides comprehensive health services to the greater Visalia area in central California. With more than 5,000 employees, the organization operates an 8‑campus healthcare district that includes an acute care hospital, specialized health centers, and clinics. Kaweah Health offers state‑of‑the‑art medicine and high‑quality preventive services across a broad continuum of care. Position Summary The Director of Risk Management oversees the Risk Management program with an emphasis on customer satisfaction, risk identification, and risk reduction strategies to ensure the delivery of safe patient care. This role leads risk‑related activities across all Kaweah Health campuses and works closely with executive leadership, compliance, quality improvement, and external partners. Job Responsibilities Facilitate identification, evaluation, and mitigation of general or professional liability issues affecting patients, visitors, staff, and Kaweah Health property. Meet weekly with the Performance Improvement Director to review high‑severity occurrence reports. Meet biweekly with the COO, CNO, CMO, and PI Director to review high‑severity patient occurrence reports. Consult and collaborate with Compliance and Internal Audit on risk assessments of various Kaweah Health departments. Conduct scheduled visits to all Kaweah Health campuses and departments to perform risk assessments, evaluate the physical environment, and observe staff performance. Consult with the Executive Team to plan and coordinate appropriate risk assessments, including engagements with outside consultants. Coordinate the Kaweah Health self‑insurance, excess insurance, and commercial insurance programs, managing policy selections and coverage reviews. Communicate quarterly with the insurance broker to review coverage and secure optimal market value. Review the Insurance Trust Fund agreement every three years with counsel and CFO, and coordinate independent insurer reviews biennially. Oversee claims management, including review of claims with counsel, determining defense strategies, authorizing settlement of minor claims, and maintaining an accurate claims database. Consult defense and administrative counsels on preventive and corrective measures to mitigate legal risks. Approve the compensation of Kaweah Health Defense Counsel. Ensure compliance with applicable codes, laws, rules, and regulations concerning patient care. Coordinate the reporting of adverse events to local, state, and federal organizations, working with the Compliance Officer and PI Director to ensure timely and accurate submissions. Participate in root cause analysis and development of action plans, maintaining records of such activities. Consult physicians for disclosure of adverse events to patients and/or families. Provide risk management education and orientation programs to Kaweah Health staff, managers, and physicians. Identify risk management trends from the RM and PI databases and determine educational needs for staff. Ensure the complaint and grievance process functions appropriately and that associated databases remain accurate, current, and complete. Review and revise Kaweah Health policies, procedures, forms, and contracts to minimize risk and ensure regulatory compliance. Maintain proper archiving of policies and procedures when revised. Review contracts for risk‑minimizing language and ensure the Room Management Plan is accurate and current. Provide regular RM reports to Kaweah Health staff, committees, and the Board of Directors. Maintain professional educational growth with awareness of industry trends, laws, and regulations, attending at least one professional RM program per year. Educate staff and governing board on any regulatory changes or trends that affect the RM program. Ensure the RM Department functions efficiently, effectively, and appropriately; review and update the RM Department Policy and Procedure Manual every three years. Provide coaching and professional development for RM staff to promote competency. Consistently assess and improve department processes and performance. Establish a realistic financial budget and monitor expenses appropriately. Consult with medical staff on risk management issues and attend the Bioethics Committee. Be available to and consult physicians regarding informed consent and termination of patient relationships. Provide consultation on disclosure of adverse events to patients and families, and notify their patients. Qualifications Current Registered Nurse license required. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. Two or more years of healthcare experience in risk, quality, and/or patient safety. Three or more years of management/supervisory experience preferred.
