Phlebotomist - Per Diem Days

Position Summary The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of specimens from patients. The phlebotomist is also cross‑trained to assist the Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) when possible, and is assigned to assist in specimen processing and filing. This person will report to the Phlebotomy Lead and Lab Manager. The role implements good public relations by representing the laboratory directly to patients, physicians, and hospital staff at all times. It assures quality of work, workflow, and turn‑around time; ensures accurate testing to support quality patient care; accepts suggestions and corrections, and adapts to changing situations. The position requires a full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital. It is expected that this individual will demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values and shall support the hospital’s strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance‑improvement process activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assure that phlebotomy supplies are restocked for all three shifts. Manage all clerical duties. Communicate appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, and physicians at all times. Maintain laboratory coverage to provide adequate patient care, which may require “last minute” schedule changes. Collect samples from inpatients using standard venipuncture or skin‑puncture techniques per established policies and procedures. Inventory, report, and restock all phlebotomy testing supplies to ensure continuity of activities. Deliver specimens to the lab as needed. Perform data entry and demonstrate proficiency using the Lab Information System (LIS) computer systems. Be proficient in using the manual backup to the LIS. Assist customers with LIS information. Ensure the workplace is clean and neat. Perform other duties as assigned. Position Requirements A. Education High School Diploma or equivalent. B. Qualifications/Experience 6 months of experience required in blood specimen collection; 3 years preferred. Internal candidates with a current CA Certified Phlebotomy Technician License will be considered. C. Special Skills/Knowledge Proficient with LIS and computer applications. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association. Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Blue Card within 90 days of hire or requirement notification.
