Personal Care Assistant

The Personal Care Assistant is responsible for performing duties to enhance the quality of services provided for residents by ensuring everyone has water, snacks, refreshments and ice; assisting aides as needed; making beds; changing sheets; helping with assisted living as requested; accompanying residents to external appointments; comforting residents; supervising residents, documenting what they do day to day.

Essential Functions

• Make and turn down beds.
• Deliver ice to resident rooms.
• Answer telephone and direct calls as appropriate.
• Deliver snacks to residents who do not require assistance in feeding.
• Transport residents as requested.
• Clean and straighten resident rooms including drawers and closets.
• Observe safety needs of residents, including use of bedrails, rail pads and other protective supports.
• Identify safety/security hazards, ensure resident is out of immediate danger, report to appropriate personnel.
• Act calmly and logically to meet unusual occurrences of the job.
• Follow safety and security guidelines, procedures and protocol for residents in the Dementia Special Care Unit.
• Maintain effective communication with residents, family, and other significant relationships.
• Provide all care, treatment and services with appropriate dementia care protocols.
• Participate in relevant educational and training activities as appropriate.
• Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.

Education & Experience

High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Preferred.

No prior experience necessary.

Computer Skills

Must possess basic computer skills.

Other Requirements

• Communicate with residents and staff.
• Follow directions and complete assigned tasks.
• Read, write, understand, and speak English.
• Previous experience with geriatrics preferred.
• Special care/dementia care employees will have additional training in caring for and treating dementia residents.
• Work with elderly residents, families, and healthcare staff members.
• Adhere to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook.
