Job Description Position Purpose This is a non‑supervisory role that requires technical ability. The Laboratory Technician II performs sample collection, preparation, extraction, and analysis according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and permitting requirements while achieving integrity of the laboratory’s results and target KPIs. KPIs include safety, productivity, and quality of work performed. The incumbent maintains workspace, equipment, instrumentation, and incoming/outgoing sample inventory. The Laboratory Technician develops and enhances troubleshooting skills and completes regular instrument maintenance and calibration procedures to enhance equipment reliability, efficiency, and accuracy. The Laboratory Technician is expected to be proficient in the performance of testing and analysis as they progress within the laboratory, which maintains a broad scope of analytical capabilities. May perform specialized analysis under the direction of the Special Projects Manager or designee in support of applied quality assurance and control procedures. Supports the training of new team members as requested. Primary Duties/Responsibilities Proficient in all Lab Technician I essential duties and responsibilities. Sets up equipment and instrumentation required for tests, research, or process control following QA procedures. Cleans and makes minor repairs on laboratory apparatus and equipment and ensures a high standard of housekeeping, quality control and safety. Calibrates instrumentation as assigned, including performing daily temperature and balance checks. Performs routine cleaning and minor troubleshooting/repairs of online instrumentation in the treatment plant; maintains proficiency in troubleshooting and maintenance of analytical equipment and documents in accordance with quality assurance and control compliance. Collects water samples in the field as assigned and performs routine tests such as turbidity, alkalinity, pH, coliform testing, TOC analysis and residual chlorine. Records and computes results from test data and maintains quality control records and charts as assigned. Performs any sample preparation required to be sent to laboratories. Maintains adequate inventory of standards, reagents, glassware, consumable supplies, and chemical stores in the work area for use. Collects and logs all Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documents for chemical stores. May assist in other areas or with special projects directed. Supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement. Ensures proper written and electronic documentation of all test results including QA/QC and audit sample documents prior to approval and completeness of summarizing data. Able to function and produce at high levels with minimum supervision and able to do routine troubleshooting. Identifies and brings to the attention of management result anomalies in a timely manner and troubleshoots common mistakes that a Lab Technician I may not recognize. Models compliance with all work practices, policies and procedures. Must follow established operational, process control, safety and emergency response procedures, including completing annual safety inspections as assigned. Must adhere to specifications and production schedule. Assists in other areas of the plant as needed. May assist with orienting or training new or less experienced Lab Techs. Work Environment The facility operates on a 24/7 basis. Spends 100% of the time in the operations environment. Typically spends 25–35% of time exposed to outdoor and sometimes inclement weather. Company service vehicles are used as required. May serve rotational 24‑hour emergency on‑call. Possible Work Hazards: Exposure to fumes, dust, toxic and caustic chemicals, noise, rotating machinery, high pressure, hot and cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water and electrical hazards. Qualifications Education/Experience/Background Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology or a related science discipline – Preferred. Prior laboratory work experience of 1–2 years with ability to use laboratory apparatus and equipment to perform accurate, repeatable work and to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Exposure to computerized lab equipment and related systems preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Time management: ability to organize and manage multiple deadlines. Strong customer orientation. Knowledge of computer programs. Ability to learn and perform more complex tests and analysis; applicable technical training as required. Basic mathematical calculations; vocational training and mechanical aptitude required; ability to read, interpret and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles and other equipment. Ability to adhere to Company policies and procedures and quickly develop proficiency in the use of all site‑specific, facility‑required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) including respirators, gas detectors, confined space equipment, etc. Consistently demonstrate the ability to perform all assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner. Knowledge of the QA/QC requirements for analysis/reporting of pertinent tests. Knowledge of written procedure content and format requirements. Ability to take instructions for the performance of non‑routine analysis. Proficiency with precision measuring devices, testing equipment and hand tools such as a screwdriver or wrench. Ability to inspect and diagnose process problems of laboratory and online equipment and take corrective action within policy and procedure limits. Recognize the importance of following procedures. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to operate LabCal System (software) and WIMS to input data for samples collected. Demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily. Perform all analyses in accordance with pertinent policies as per the Laboratory Quality Manual. Progression may require understanding of the plant operating approval as it pertains to laboratory and chemical processing operations, fluency in process limitations and disposal limits of the landfills and deep disposal well. Maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures. May perform more advanced functions under supervision as part of training and development. Complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, negative alcohol and drug test, pre‑employment medical, and background check. Required Certification/Licenses/Training Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record. Employee orientation, departmental operating procedures, safety, OSHA and quality training. Become proficient in the care and use of all site-specific, facility-required PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). Complete semi-annual proficiency testing. May perform more advanced functions under supervision as part of training and development. Physical Requirements Spends standing 25% of shift, walking 75% of shift, covering up to five miles per shift. Requires close visual and hearing observation to detect non‑conformance and machine malfunction. Constantly uses hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently reaches with hands and arms. Works in various positions; works on ladders, catwalks, and other elevated areas up to 50 feet above the ground; uses hand tools weighing up to 15 pounds for up to 40 minutes. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds (occasionally 60 pounds) over distances of 10 feet. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch; use of ladders or stairs required.
