Senior Staff Attorney

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Staff Attorney based in United States.

This is a senior legal and policy role supporting local elected officials across a diverse national network.
The position combines legal research, policy analysis, strategic advising, and movement-oriented advocacy.
A major focus will be advancing immigrant justice through collaboration with local, state, and national partners.
The role will also contribute to work across economic justice, housing, public safety, local democracy, and home rule.
You will develop practical resources, advise members on complex policy questions, and help navigate state and federal preemption.
The position offers opportunities to shape programs, lead working groups, and collaborate directly with leaders and impacted communities.
This fully remote role requires regular travel to in-person events and reports to the Managing Director, Legal and Policy.

Accountabilities:

• Provide legal and policy analysis and strategic guidance to local elected officials across a range of jurisdictions.
• Draft, edit, and review legal memoranda, amicus briefs, policy documents, and other legal materials.
• Manage and oversee the development of legal documents and related work produced by external partners.
• Research and respond to policy and legal questions, including rapid-response requests requiring timely analysis.
• Develop policy briefs, campaign toolkits, template resolutions, training curricula, and other resources that help local leaders translate ideas into action.
• Identify and advance creative policy approaches that enable local governments to act despite state and federal preemption.
• Serve as a subject-matter expert and lead strategist for immigrant justice initiatives.
• Design, plan, and implement immigrant justice programming across virtual and in-person formats.
• Lead and support webinars, working groups, interactive meetings, site visits, conferences, and other network programming.
• Staff the Immigrant Justice Steering Committee and support members in developing leadership and advancing shared goals.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with external organizations and partners working on immigrant justice.
• Collaborate with national, state, and local partners to develop strategies that support immigrant communities and advance inclusive local policy.
• Provide timely resources, strategic support, and collaboration to elected officials working on transformational local policy.
• Contribute policy leadership in additional areas as needed, including land use, procurement, county legal authority, First Amendment issues, and democracy protections.
• Collaborate across organizational teams on caucus activities, state chapters, leadership academies, reports, convenings, web products, and related initiatives.
• Support funder relationships and contribute to identifying opportunities to expand organizational support.
• Develop work plans, coordinate stakeholders, anticipate challenges, and ensure projects move forward effectively.

Requirements:

• Juris Doctor degree and admission to practice law in a U.S. state or jurisdiction.
• At least 9 years of relevant legal or policy experience.
• At least 4 years of experience working on immigrant justice through policy, organizing, direct legal representation, impact litigation, or related work.
• Experience working with organizing and campaigns, including collaboration with organizers or through movement-lawyering approaches.
• Strong legal research, analytical, writing, and editing skills.
• Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to translate complex legal and policy issues for varied audiences.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate, high-quality work under tight timelines.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and execute detailed work plans.
• Strategic judgment, initiative, and the ability to anticipate obstacles and identify practical solutions.
• Strong stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to determine when and how to involve relevant partners.
• Ability to build relationships and motivate a diverse range of people across different local contexts and backgrounds, including in virtual environments.
• Experience with relational organizing and collaborative approaches to advancing shared goals.
• Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and an interest in local policy, politics, and government.
• Awareness of how power, race, class, gender, privilege, and related dynamics can shape workplace culture and organizational decision-making.
• Experience with “inside/outside” strategies that connect community organizing with the work of elected officials is valued.
• Litigation experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with municipal authorities and legal frameworks, including land use, zoning, and procurement, is preferred.
• Ability and willingness to travel for in-person events for up to six days per month.

Benefits:

• Annual salary between $108,600 and $111,000, determined through a salary scale based on relevant experience and advanced degrees.
• Union-represented position with employment terms and conditions governed by a collective bargaining agreement.
• Salary placement follows the collectively bargained scale and is not individually negotiable once the applicable factors have been assessed.
