Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) – Part Time Northern State Prison, Newark, NJ – University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is seeking a Part Time Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) to provide direct and indirect nursing care for inpatient and ambulatory populations, with an emphasis on psychiatric and general health needs. Overview University Correctional Health Care operates within Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, delivering physical, mental, dental, and sex offender treatment services to those involved in New Jersey’s criminal justice system. With a budget of $150 million and about 1,000 staff, UCHC maintains a commitment to compassionate, accessible, research‑informed care. Responsibilities Provide direct and indirect nursing care to inmates, addressing physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs for adults (18‑64 years) and geriatrics (65+). Use psychiatric standards of nursing practice to develop individualized treatment plans, goals, and interventions for each patient. Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore physical and mental health across all age groups. Collaborate with multidisciplinary care providers to evaluate patient responses and ensure quality care. Perform duties related to milieu and safety, documented through specific paperwork and supervisory observation. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in New Jersey. Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent preferred. Required Certifications and Licenses Current CPR Certification. Valid driver’s license; must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites. Physical Demands Must be capable of performing CPR for at least ten minutes and physically lift/assist patients up to 50 pounds, including carrying an emergency treatment bag weighing up to 45 pounds.
