Job Summary Surgeon Technologists (ST) assist in the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics under the general direction of a professional nurse. The ST possesses expertise in sterile aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a surgeon’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The ST also performs dual functions in the operating room and the ambulatory setting, demonstrating competency in pre-and post-operative care in the outpatient surgical clinic. Work Performed Level I Responsibilities Perform all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates Service Excellence towards patients, physicians, peers and other departments. Undertake responsibilities for upholding policies and procedures of the department and organization. Maintain a sterile field and assist the team in maintaining a sterile environment. Demonstrate a good understanding of sterile technique, basic knowledge of instrumentation, and prepare the operating room with appropriate instrumentation, equipment and supplies. Perform safe and accurate instrument counts. Serve patients in the age range from infancy to geriatric. Take calls and rotate shifts as required under the direction of a registered nurse. Assist with ambulatory clinic tasks such as preparing patients for examinations, collecting laboratory specimens, reinforcing postoperative instructions, and assisting with patient calls. Execute additional clinical functions delegated and supervised by the RN or physician, such as removing sutures or staples, changing dressings, scheduling and posting surgical cases, coordinating complex scheduling, and updating patient records. Advance to Level II within 18 months. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. Level II Responsibilities Assist in teaching newly hired technologists and student technologists. Serve as a role model for new employees and other staff members. Maintain the sterile field independently and anticipate the needs of the surgical team. Apply knowledge of instrumentation to multiple cases and correct deficiencies at the case level. Communicate effectively with patients, staff, and physicians. Adhere to unit, hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals. Assume responsibility for self-management and reinforce safety practices of the operating room and hospital. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to adapt to changes within the unit. Ability to work effectively under pressure in a stressful environment, often without relief. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy related to the surgical procedure and required instrumentation. Ability to set priorities and respond appropriately to actual or potential life-threatening situations. Minimum Qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or holds an accredited Surgical Technologist certification (NCCT or NBSTSA). Evidence of completion of an appropriate surgical technology training program in the United States Military is acceptable. Experience Level I – Entry-level position for new graduates or practitioners with 0 to 18 months experience. Level II – Requires 6 to 12 months of full-time equivalent Surgical Technology or relevant military experience. Degrees, Licensures, Certifications Both Level I and Level II require BLS certification.
